He-Man Is Back! Here’s Why That’s Terrifying.
The new Masters of the Universe movie hits theaters on June 5th, 2026. And if you grew up with the original 1983 Filmation He-Man cartoon — Saturday mornings, bowl of cereal, plastic sword raised above your head — you already know the feeling. Excitement. And fear.
Hollywood has tried this before. Multiple times. And the results have ranged from Frank Langella’s genuinely committed Skeletor performance to He-Man inexplicably ending up in suburban California with no Battle Cat and no transformation scene. So before June 5th arrives, we need to talk about what the new movie actually has to understand about the original cartoon. Not the toys. Not the nostalgia. The feeling.
The original He-Man cartoon was cheap, repetitive, and absolutely designed to sell action figures. It was also genuine mythology for an entire generation of kids. The new movie doesn’t have to be a perfect remake. It just has to remember why a skinny kid in 1983 raised a plastic sword above his head in his living room and shouted “I have the power.”
June 5th, 2026. We’re about to find out if they got it right.

It fails on the duality of He-Man as he still acts like Adam throughout, just with a change of wardrobe.

He needs to wear pink and purple. In part because he doesnt act like the lisping steriotype they could of made him act. He is just a guy who likes pink and purple and thats Ok. Its an important part of the foundation of the character to me – visual language that is simple but tells you a lot
You might ponder the changes in visual bodybuilder language (from proportal 'perfect' human to twisted human) and compare it to how people lose track of what He-Man is about.

my Quality check list
1. How many action figures I owned as a kid got in the movie?
2. does everyone look like the character they are supposed to be?
3. How is the music?
4. How much time is spent on Earth?
5. Is everyone in character?
6. are the jokes timeless so they don't feel poorly aged with too many modern ideas? does it feel like a movie made in any era or does it feel like a time capsule of 2026?
7. She-Ra post credits or mention or Easter Eggs
8. no pop songs included
9. no characters added just for the movie or killed off because they were too hard to add to the film
10. reference to the last live action movie but not too obvious
11. respect the fandom
12. no meta jokes

I've been a He-Man fan since I was 6 years old. I remember being so enthralled with the show that my siblings could walk back and forth in front of the TV and I wouldn't even notice.😄

Between Leto and the woke actress screaming about toxic masculinity, I don't have much faith. Could be wrong, just sounds like another clueless cash grab nostalgia bait movie.
Just makes me sad first Star Wars died, now this could likely be the last try for He-Man in awhile. Hope they don't mess it up.

I've been a He-Man fan since I was 10 years old. They were preparing the launch of the 2002 version on Cartoon Network, and began releasing the original series on video. I loved both of them, but because of the action, animation, and storytelling, I got far more excited by the 2000s version. I still respect the original series. I also actually enjoyed the 1987 movie. This movie does drag at times, but it also has heart, and I love Courteney Cox being in it! I am really happy they are bringing He-Man back, and the trailer looks pretty good! Still waiting for Orko to appear and to hopefully get the real Eternia experience! Fingers crossed! I support this movie!

meh, i don't even care about movies these days. they're all ass. i haven't set foot in a theater since before covid. hollywood doesn't make movies, they destroy them. so hoping that they'll somehow do this justice is just setting yourself up for disappointment. i hope it's good, i hope they don't fail miserably, but i'm not buying a ticket, and i'm not holding my breath.

Truth be told, I just want the new Masters of the Universe movie to be a huge success, so that MGM Amazon Studios She-Ra: Princess of Power is a very worthy sequel movie.

That one part is the thing I'm the most worried about; That He-Man and his allies are just going to be blasting and cutting down enemies left and right. Even the clips from the preview were showing him swording up goons. Because that was the part of He-Man that stuck with me the most, just like Batman in Batman: The Animated Series; They protected without violence and genuinely lived up to the ideals they preached. They weren't just some action heroes or tough guys; They pulled a Spider-Man by showing how great responsibility could go with great power. And that's the part of the show that kept me coming back.
…that and Teela and Sorceress and Evil Lyn in those leotards. I knew I liked those even as a kid.

Oh hell no. I did grow up with He-Man. Watched the cartoon at every opportunity (even She-Ra), had most of the toys too. The only emotions I'm feeling over the new movie are anger and disgust. They already killed He-Man once with the 1987 movie, now they've dug him up just to kill him again and piss on the grave. I don't know how any OG He-Man fan can look at this with excitement.

MotU already got it's own mythology wrong the first time around: packaging every toy with a comic that had a plot from a parallel toy-universe with no Prince Adam, and a cosmic 2-part sword mythology that required both Hem-Man & Skelator's swords to unlock Castle Greyskull. The toy-line literally bore little-to-no resemblance to the Filmation Universe.

I'm excited for the new He Man but Jared Leto as Skeletor is pretty concerning. But we'll see if he can thread the line between humor and still feeling menacing, like the classic version.
Also sad to see Orko is left out again. I can understand him not being in the Dolph Lundren version but theres no reason why this new one couldn't have him as a CGI character floating around.

I loved the cartoon as a kid. I had the action figures and Castle Grayskull. I loved He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. I was a bit disappointed and underwhelmed at the 87 Masters of the Universe. I have to admit, I am very dubious about this version that's about to hit theaters. Giving Hollywood's track record, as of late with all the destruction of beloved IP's at the altar of WOKE DEI. Yes, that's still a thing, unfortunately. So I will have to wait and see, but I'm not excited. I hope I'm wrong.

You forgot the CGI He Man cartoon. Seriously that cartoon is genuinely good and is too overlooked. It was faithful to the franchise but wasn't afraid to try new things and stands well on it's own. The show also has tge best Skeletor since the 2002 cartoon version voiced by Benjamin Diskin.

See as a kid you know who I loved? Skeletor! ! He was smarter than everyone else. He was funnier than everyone else, and he only didn’t win because he was not as strong as he man and surrounded by idiots. That’s how I felt as a kid. I also think I had an unconscious crush cause I mean, I was eight I didn’t know what it was on Evil-lyn

My uncle took my brother and I to see the original MOTU movie in the theater in August of 1987. I was five and it was just before I started Kindergarten. So, no matter if this film is an absolute dumpster fire, I will have wonderful memories of sharing the original experience with my brother and uncle to keep me warm 😊

I hope it is good, hope it makes money, hope it gets sequels. I really hope it opens the door for more good cartoon based movies. Ones that come to mind would be Animaniacs, Centurions, Freakazoid!, Gargoyles, Jem and Holograms(good version), Kim Possible(good version), Pirates of Dark Water, Powerpuff Girls, Silverhawks, Thundercats, Tiny Toon Adventures, W.I.T.C.H., etc.

Every generation gets told to ‘man up,’ but He-Man understood the assignment: protect people, stand on principle, and serve immaculate looks. Skeletor was never winning that fight.
