I'd say that Dave Brock was being diplomatic when he talkd about Ginger Baker. He was only with Hawkwind for 1 nalbum and 1 tour ( Levitation ), and some say Baker was kicked out by Dave Brock, whereas Baker will say he left. I do know that Baker wanted to play a DRUM SOLO on tour to which Brocky said NO. Hawkwind fans just don't go in for drum solos.

It would be cool to hear you do a Hawkwind ranking show at some point. They're such a unique and interesting band. I love so many of their albums. Space Ritual is one of my two all time favorite live albums. It was great hearing Brock reminiscing about Calvert.

I went to see Hawkwind at a mini-festival in what I remember as being a pub back garden. (Although maybe it wasn't, I was well charged at the event.)
Anyway, Dave came on stage after one of the bands and said that Ginger Baker would be on drums for the Hawkwind set. This got a cheer from the audience. Dave then added something like, 'If he holds it together.'
As the festival got closer to the Hawkwind set, Dave came on stage and said Ginger wouldn't be capable of playing drums at that time, so does anybody here want to have a go…?

Shall I wheel out an anecdote? (Squeaky wheels on this one.)
Why not?
Many years ago, I was at a session in somebody's flat, and a tune came on the stereo which very much caught my interest.
I thought it was a track from Hawkwind and as, at that time (late 70s/early 80s) I had all the released Hawkwind stuff, I thought it might be a high quality bootleg.
I slid over to the stereo, and found it was Hallogallo by Neu!
So I thought that Neu! had certainly been listening to Hawkwind, and did a fine job of making a similar sound. (Hallogallo is one of my favourite tunes of all time.) It has a similar vibe to Opa-Loka.
I knew that the album Warrior On The Edge Of Time had been released in 1975, so was very surprised to read on the album cover that the self-titled Neu! album, from which came Hallogallo, was released in 1972.
So I found it interesting that Kosmische Musik, (or to give it the title John Peel gave it, Krautrock), is mentioned in this interview, and one of the heavyweights of that time, Amon Duul, were due to play at a concert with Hawkwind.

The inimitable Dave Brock! A legend and innovator. What a treat, thanks. I've been a big fan since I stumbled across Hall of the Mountain Grill and brought it home with me in 1974.

Man, so enjoyed this. Thank you, Barry. Hawkwind and Caravan have been very dear to me since I first heard them in the early 70s.

And may he live and breathe for many more years, the guy is an absolute legend.
Although I have enjoyed ex members projects, especially ICU, Hawkwind is, was and always will be Dave's band.
They were my life from 1979 for a decade and I first saw them both nights at Hammy odean on the levitation tour aged 12 and followed them everywhere I could from stonehenge to the metropole hotel in Brighton ( science fiction festival) amongst numerous venues.
Ashamedly the last time I got to see them was at the palladium with the philharmoniconic orchestra a few years back, however my then 14 Yr old son came with me and thoroughly enjoyed the show which on a personal level for me was very special.
OK I've rambled on for far to long now.
Thank you Dave for giving up the busking!!

Not good to start your interview not knowing who you're interviewing!
Even Dave Brock picked up on that, saying Magnus has been in the band for five years!

Thank you very much for this interview, Barry. It meant a lot to me to hear it. Dave is a legend – and kudos to Magnus for his songwriting and playing. Dave sounds the same cheerful chap I corresponded with briefly back in the mid-1980s…he's a generous soul on every level. And I savoured the discussion about Barney Bubbles and Robert Calvert….legends who are no longer with us.

Brilliant.Seen The Wind a few times and the dancing girls amidst the musical background always interesting.I must admit their set was never predictable such was their repatoire.Amazed Dave Brock outlived Lemmy such were their drug fused days back then. For anyone not versed it was Brock that taught Lemmy how to place bass guitar. The rest as they say became history.
