Gold Price Nears $4,000, Macron’s 48-Hour Deadline to Soften Crisis | The Opening Trade 10/7

French President Emmanuel Macron gave his outgoing prime minister, Sebastien Lecornu, until Wednesday night to negotiate with France’s political parties in a last-ditch effort to prevent the country from falling deeper into crisis. Macron’s options include appointing a new prime minister, calling a parliamentary election, or resigning, with opposition groups clamoring for fresh legislative elections. French-German bond spreads are widening.

A prolonged US government shutdown, upheaval in France and leadership change in Japan have all driven gold higher in the latest surge. Spot prices have risen about 50% this year, on track for the biggest annual gain since 1979.
