Going Beyond Einstein: Linking Time And Consciousness

Essentia Foundation | October 25, 2024

This is day 2 of Essentiaโ€™s Time and Mind conference, our scientific discussion of the profound mystery of the passage of time and how it relates to consciousness.

Many physicists maintain that the passage of time is purely a feature of mind, beyond physics itself, while others argue that it points to some new physical paradigm, perhaps associated with the marriage of relativity theory and quantum theory. Certainly, the status of time in any final theory of physics remains unclear. What is clear, however, is that a theory that encompasses time and mind will have to go beyond Einsteinโ€™s Block Universe.

The possibility that physics may eventually accommodate and elucidate the nature of consciousness and associated experience suggests the need to address issues that are currently viewed as being on the borders of physics and philosophy. It also impinges on developments in neurophysics, cognitive science and psychology. So this is an interdisciplinary problem and this conference brings together experts in all the relevant fields. There are contributions from the physicists Bernard Carr, Paul Davies, George Ellis and Lee Smolin, the neurophysicist Alex Gomez-Marin, the cognitive neuroscientist Julia Mossbridge, and the psychologists Jonathan Schooler and Marc Wittmann.

Although the conference is organized by Essentia Foundationโ€”which is associated with the philosophical tradition of Idealismโ€”it covered a wide range of approaches. Our vision is to cover topics that are relevant to Idealism, but not to exclude alternative views from the conference.

I constantly can see precise bits of my own future, actual moments. I can tell almost instantly when a news item will be found out to be wrong, I just know they have got it wrong. My brain can pluck complete new music out of the either. And I think I can lknow future discoveries in physics. So yes precogs do exist.

Time, billions and billions of years ago, something from nothing happenedโ€ฆ. Sorry this theory is bogus. The Origin Of Species by Means of Natural Section and the Preservation of most Favored Races in the Struggle for Life.โ€ It was my opinion the book was racist throughout. I find the โ€œsomething from nothingโ€ evolutionary theories harder to believe than Creationism. God made time and he knows how many seconds we will be on earth as he is omnipresent and omnipotent. He is eternal. We see amazing building designed by men and never wonder if those stones were put there by an explosion plus billions of X billions of years time. Keep thinking folks. IF you seek God, (not religion & self righteous works) you will find Him and He will save you. Receive Him. He is worthy. โ€œBeam me up, Scotty.โ€ lol.

My own precog moment that didnโ€™t come to pass: At age four, while quietly drowning, I โ€œsawโ€ float past me a newspaper headline that read โ€œgirl drowns in Columbia Riverโ€ at which moment my father swooped me out of the water, sealing that fame never to be.

Julia Mossbridge is pitiful with her non-falsifiable fantasies. Anybody with a diploma from a decent high school can get an online trading account and could very easily make a fortune exactly as Paul Davies suggested, with just the least proportionally favorable tips from the future. It doesn't take a professional investor to do this. Davies was also spot on that Mossbridge's rationalization about expected consequences require a conspiracy theory. There are many billionaires, many who got much of their fortune from stock trading, but none of them continue to make consistent extravagant profits beyond statistical probability. Anybody who makes a large amount of profits from stock trading year after year and month after month will be investigated by the FTC because it is industry knowledge that it is impossible to beat probability. The people who manage to do this for a few years eventually go under as insider traders, Ponzi schemers, etc. All legal traders ultimately regress to the norm. … And the only thing that the tupperware lid analogy has going for it is that it's unique– because the analogy is awful. Lids aren't "borders" any more that the other container edges are borders. Even less so since you can use tupperware containers without the lids (for example to over-fill them). We have Saran Wrap, aluminum foil, etc.

All the evidence we have suggests that consciousness is emergent from the brain. Almost all the experts in all relevant academic fields say consciousness is an emergent property of physical processes. Is the problem of consciousness solved? No. But until we have actual evidence (novel testable predictions) to say otherwise there's no reason to think we need an entirely new ontology to explain it. It's fine to contemplate alternative theories, but to suggest they're on equal evidentiary footing is very misleading at best.

Time is easy to understand if you think of it as the expansion rate of three dimensional space, which is slowed by Gravity, making it relative to the position of the of the observer. That also explains the arrow of time.

I think when people say they look at a tree and see God. They're just coming from a creationist perspective.

Like they should be able to explain it. Like an autistic person can explain their empathy.

Or like a person who can see color says color exist. The qualities should still be explainable some how.

You lost me at 2 Psychologists.

I can make up my own educated guess thanks.

30 years ago 2 psychologists opining would be of little to no value.

Thatโ€™s still true today, for reasons elucidated around the 12min 20 sec mark.

A few weeks ago i woke up in my room with blood flowing out of a vein on my arm and an IV in my hand, in shock I yelled out to my son asking him what the he'll was going on. He replied "Dad you just walked home from the hospital with no shoes after having a temporal seizure 24hr before."
I returned to hospital and Doc said I must have still been in a Seizure.
All I remember is going to sleep then dreaming of walking home from hospital but like a lucid dream and the only time I remember coming into conciousness while walking home was when I had to change direction to get home then black out till the next change in direction, then waking up in my room, seeing blood then in shock with what just happened… 24hs past and it felt so quick๐Ÿ˜‚
    Freaky $#!t๐Ÿ˜‚

It is interesting when in a deep state of sleep, while dreaming, a person can experience a whole drama that lasts from morning until night, but within the span of one clock hour. So a person can fall asleep, letโ€™s say at 4AM, dream for one hour, but in that one hour dream state, have lived an entire day. Fascinating how our minds do that.

Personally fasting has helped me reach this point of feeling one with all there is. Colors are more vivid. Life is more vivid. For me this starts after 48 hours of fasting. Food can ground us too much. For those who live in the U.S. notice how bread (wheat gluten) affects your brain, mood and body. Food creates mood. Celery and cucumber juice does wonders and is easy to make. Place celery and cucumber in a blender with water and some lemon juice with a little sea salt. Itโ€™s rejuvinating. No need to have a juicer. A blender will work.

Ok, well how does the future octopus know how to get out of the maze in order to tell the present octopus.

Furthermore, of course a statistician wants direct experience, the best quality data is your own experience.

To wake up in the middle of this conference after a serie of weird events is very unsetling, id definitly say positive tho.
i'm far from being smart enough to understand the exact scientific sayings and i dont know what conclusion to draw but this definitly adds up to the " its very hard to believe its real but i cant deny it happened anyway " pile.

Thank you to the scientific community and their hardwork.
And thank you God, for allowing me to live this moment.
(I'll let you define god, i probably wont be able to provide a definition that satisfy everyone anyway, just want to mention its the first time I feel the need to write those 3 words consecutivly )

    Warning : Long comment ahead.
    โ€˜Informationโ€™ ????
    What is โ€˜informationโ€™ ? Why donโ€™t we have a clear & rigorous definition of โ€˜informationโ€™ ?
Space & time, matter & energy, information, sentience, thinking & consciousnessโ€ฆ..
Most – all ? – serious investigators consider โ€˜informationโ€™ to be one of the fundamental elements of reality, but, again, we donโ€™t have a clear & rigorous definition of the phenomenon.
Most consciousness researchers refer to IIT – integrative information theory – but even within IIT โ€˜informationโ€™ – as a separate & distinct phenomenon in its own right – is not defined with any rigour. Again, it is not defined with a satisfactory amount of verifiable rigour.
โ€˜Thoughtโ€™, โ€˜mindโ€™, โ€˜intelligenceโ€™, โ€˜cognitionโ€™ & โ€˜consciousnessโ€™ are all information-related phenomena and it is not difficult to show that one of the principal reasons we have not so far come to any good, proper & fully verifiable understanding of these otherwise greatly sought-after yet still highly mysterious phenomena is due in great part to the simple fact that we do not presently also have a good & proper, fully verifiable understanding ofย  โ€˜informationโ€™ย ย itself.
Although I have personally had the (dubious) fortune of having been able to figure out โ€˜informationโ€™sโ€™ correct (& fully verifiable) ontological identity – plus a full science of the phenomenon to boot – and although Iโ€™m not going to divulge its formalistic definition here in this YouTube comment (without which formalistic definition it is not possible to establish a full & accurate science of the phenomenon, but with it it is) nevertheless I can assure you that with it in hand – that is, with โ€˜informationโ€™sโ€™ correct ontological identity within oneโ€™s investigative arsenal (along with a full science thereof also), the exercise of determining the ontological identities (along with an accompanying science of each also) of all of the other directly information-related phenomena such as โ€˜thoughtโ€™, โ€˜mindโ€™, โ€˜cognitionโ€™, โ€˜intelligenceโ€™, โ€˜learningโ€™, โ€˜understandingโ€™, โ€˜sentienceโ€™, โ€˜consciousnessโ€™ & โ€˜self-consciousnessโ€™ (to far less than exhaust the list) becomes one of no great difficulty.
A full science of any one particular phenomenon will include the phenomenonโ€™s exact specifications, quantifications & understandings of such things as itโ€™s : nature (its ontological identity); its standing (in the existential hierarchy); its role; function; varieties; distribution; incidences; properties/extensions/capacities/capabilities; usages; handling- &/or operational amenabilities & its typical life history (its creation through to its dissolution/erasure).
Once โ€˜informationโ€™sโ€™ correct ontological identity is recognised & understood, no especial difficulty attends the task of determining a full science of the phenomenon. Repeat, no especial difficulty attends the task of determining its nature, standing, role, function, varieties, distribution, incidences, properties/extensions/capacities/capabilities, usages, handling- &/or operational amenabilities, & its typical life history (its creation through to its dissolution/erasure).
โ€˜Handling & operational amenabilitiesโ€™ ? โ€˜Informationโ€™ can be subject to a particularly large & highly varied kind & amount of safe/non-destructive โ€˜handling & operational procedures & processesโ€™, & which particular procedures & processes can be performed on any kind & amount of โ€˜informationโ€™ within a very numerically large & highly varied kind of mechanisms, machines, systems, gadgets, contrivances & devices (those both animate & inanimate alike).
Consider how very, very many handling & operational processes & procedures to which (pretty much all) units of information can be safely subject even as the meanings thereof remain un-altered. It – information – can be : copied (onto an almost limitless number of mediums such as light, air, paper, comms screens, neon tubing on billboards & the walls of Times Square, etc, etc); transferred; transported; transmitted; transduced, transformed (into symbols, & then back into analogue or one of its other forms); reflected/bounced; stored; retrieved from storage; sorted/processed; collated; integrated; re-animated back into any other previous form, including its next-to-original state).
Indeed, once both โ€˜informationโ€™sโ€™ correct ontological identity is known along with a full science thereof, much clarifying light is thrown upon essentially all of the other fundamental elements of reality – space, time, matter, energy, charge, etc, etc.
Nevertheless, again, & however surprising – given that we live smack bang right in the middle of โ€˜the information ageโ€™ – the simple, easily verified fact of the matter is, nowhere within the annals of the entire compendium of human discourse, is โ€˜informationโ€™ defined with any scientific/mathematical rigour at all – let alone with sufficient rigour as would allow it to be included in any properly scientific – or mathematical, or philosophical – research work or project.
โ€˜Moviesโ€™ ? Movie making & showing – from cameras to screens & projectors – is a classic & extremely common instance of โ€˜handlingโ€™ & subjecting common, everyday pictographic & acoustic information to a not-small number of handling operations. Movies are composed of information – of pictographic & acoustic information – of first captured in cameras, stored & then eventually replayed through a projector, pictographic & acoustic information. Yet, just as the individual units of the pictographic & acoustic information making up the content of any movie get shunted through any of the movie-making-&-showing machinery & process (from movie set to big screen), can be readily identified, observed, followed & understood, so too can all of the individual units of all of the different kinds of information wherever & whenever they exist here in our Universe, including whatever particular processes & operations under which they may be being subject, not omitting any units of information going through our own brains – they can all be identified, classified, tracked-&-traced & understood also. Once โ€˜informationโ€™sโ€™ correct ontological identity is known & understood.
Indeed, it becomes no more difficult to identify, track-&-trace, classify & understand any information being shuttled & operated on inside our own brains than is the task of identifying & tracking-&-tracing water through a water mill, or electricity through a city or nutrients through their respective metabolic pathways, & which particular tracking-&-tracing task also includes that of determining both the locations & the functioning of all of the critical, non-informational (mechanical) processorial & operational components within these systems.
Indeed again ! The task of identifying, tracing-&-tracking information anywhere at any time under any circumstances, including through our own brains, is no more difficult than identifying, tracing-&-tracking the computing processes & algorithmic operations being performed on the bits, bytes & digits churning through a computer.
Nevertheless, this task of identifying, tracking-&-tracing & understanding information where- & whenever any of it exists here in our Universe, becomes as unproblematic as it ultimately proves itself to be only after โ€˜informationโ€™sโ€™ correct identity is known & understood – including the facts that โ€˜informationโ€™ is not computer digits, & computing is not thinking.
Indeed, on only slightly closer inspection computers turn out to be nothing more than up-scaled, turbo charged, electronically automated abacuses, quite literally simple beads-on-strings counting devices – & as such can no more think, learn, understand & be conscious – let alone do so intelligently – than can a school childโ€™s โ€™times tableโ€™, a farmerโ€™s almanac, a mathematicianโ€™s log tables or a technicianโ€™s slide rule. Or a kindergartenerโ€™s set of coloured beads-on-strings.
Furthermore, identifying, tracking-&-tracing the movement of all of the streams of information which eventually make up the content of our own consciousness, enables the exact location of the latter to be determined, & which Mark Solms has already determined as being within the periaqueductal gray region of the brain stem โ€ฆ.
Indeed, examining the particular function of the particular component of our brain which exists at this particular โ€™Mark Solms spotโ€™ further allows a determination of exactly what consciousness itself is – as a phenomenon in its own right – to be madeโ€ฆโ€ฆ.
    โ€˜Informationโ€™ is real, it can be distinguished from โ€˜spaceโ€™ & โ€˜timeโ€™ & โ€˜matterโ€™ & โ€˜energyโ€™ & from โ€˜thoughtโ€™, โ€˜mindโ€™, โ€˜intelligenceโ€™ & โ€˜consciousnessโ€™, it can be identified, observed, measured, tracked-&-traced. And understood.
Go do it ! And absolutely cease failing to include it in all studies of, well, of anything & everything โ€ฆ..including any & all โ€˜consciousnessโ€™ studies.
    Cheers

I believe we can teach this much quicker just by step by step use your own this is easy TRUTH be told but how to understanding what you seeing with logic then communication for me this done through my vision which I place in your mind then started have a go when your able to see actually this more relevant than time
