GOD IS EMPTY: The Story of The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Zero”
“‘God is empty, just like me’—this single line fueled the iconic track “ZERO” off The Smashing Pumpkins’ monumental 1995 album ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.’ How did Billy Corgan channel his self-loathing into a track that redefined The Smashing Pumpkins, and what made it resonate with a ‘messed-up generation’? Join me as I explore the history and heart of ‘Zero.'”

"Mellon Collie" is great. there is not doubt about it. In my opinion though, "Siamese Dream" is pure perfection. also, an INCREDIBLE track from "Mellon Collie" which seems to get overlooked, is "Where Boys Fear To Tread". POWERFUL song

Everything else aside, the way both Jimmy and D'arcy look like in this video made me feel funny things.
But the song itself is great.

ironically 'God' or 'Conciousness' is emptiness and so are we. We are everything (matter) and nothing (empty).

I saw Smashing Pumpkins in Glasgow 1996 and they rocked out for hours. Billy was in the zone for so long, playing encore after encore until the rest of the band were so tired they put their instruments down to get him to finish the set. They left the stage without him in the end. Awesome gig.
I believe there’s a reference to that night in the b-sides record liner notes with a song called ‘Glasgow 3am’ (5am?).

Everyone who thinks God, the father of all spirit children, is an angry and neglectful person, are lost and angry. The reason for so much pain in this world is the fact that Satan wants nothing less than for everyone to be alone and angry like him. He has caused so much confusion that many people believe the pain comes from God as punishment. He is actually a loving and kind God which is why you can feel this renewed sense of being when you give yourself completely to God.

Often overlooked is the influence of Pete Shelley’s ‘Homosapian’ on the vocal cadence of this song

I feel like I said sayings like that out of pessimism and loathing of getting up at the crack of dawn for work and school it was cold and dark. Billy got it exactly right as usual! 🧡

I don’t know man. I think he was just writing dark nihilistic lyrics and riffs because he knew thats what the fans and record labels wanted. I don’t believe it’s really that deep. The song itself works well and was a huge hit (not one of my favorites personally) but I think he writes lyrics to suit the song and this was gonna be the big angsty hit to shift units of MCATIS. But I do like your interpretation and video essay.

The best part of the alternative music boom of the mid 90s was the push from record companies to cash in on the trend and try to manufacture the sound, which led to a lot of cheap knock off bands. Some of the very things the music pushed against became the things that killed it.

I knew the guy who made this & the bullets with butterfly wings video. Mostly just made commercials and did drugs, so obviously successful. Not my favorite human. But bullets is favorite & zero is my second favorite pumpkins song.

I just stumbled onto your channel this morning, and I dig it. You should check out the album, "Everything I Long For" by Hayden. He's an indie songwriter from Toronto who influenced my playing a lot. Not for a video per se. From what I can tell we share similar musical tastes, so I think you need to hear it if you have not. I bought that CD when I was around 13 and consider it to be one of the best albums ever written by a Canadian.

Smashing Pumpkins is one of my all time favorite bands man. Saw them in Arlington last September with Green Day, Rancid, and The Linda Linda's. One of the best shows I've ever seen and I have seen A LOT😂
