Gary Numan’s ‘Beserker’ is seen as one of his most interesting album of the 1980s, now getting the box set treatment… but is it worth buying

This is a fascinating album before he went all industrial…. anyone consider it one of their favourites?

Hadn't heard Berserker until this reissue and I was disappointed it didn't live up to what I'd read about it. Some very good tracks though. I liked the bonus disc more than the album, and the live set is excellent, so overall this box is worth getting.

I saw this, got it, posted about it, and that led to a friend pointing out to me that he was going to be in Omaha, and that led to me going to see him last October. It's a favorite for that reason alone.

I have to say, I never had you down as a Numan fan, a welcome surprise.
I’d started to go off him around this time as my music tastes broadened.
Over the last 15 or so years I’ve come back into the fold, although nothing will touch his 2 TA albums and first 2 GN efforts.
I will get this though, as I’ interested to hear what I’d missed back then.
Great review, as always!

This remains one of my favourite Numan albums, a return to form after the hugely disappointing Dance & Warrior albums.

Great review Barry, must get a copy of this. Back in the day I had moved after Telekon and the Live albums, he said he was retiring from live shows but obviously changed his mind soon after. Saw the video for "My Name is Ruin" in 2017 and had to investigate a different Numan with Savage. Many decades and albums to catch up on.

I first saw Gary on the 1979 Pleasure Principal tour at the Hammersmith Apollo. What an experience! Billy Currie was amazing, and 'On Broadway' live is my favourite track from the entire 80's. I still remain a proud Numanoid!

Great points. I got a signed copy of this at one of the gigs. It’s put together with real quality.

I enjoyed this box set when it was released. It was a surprise though, as it hasn’t been followed up with say The Fury or Strange Charm etc. As for the dvd of the tour, I guess a lot of us fans already have it, and to include it would have made the set bulkier and more expensive, perhaps even cost prohibitive for the compiling of the set and for potential buyers. Shame though as you say in terms of completist needs for Berserker. I loved the album at the time, and still enjoy some of it. But I do feel in hindsight that it was the least favoured album thus far in the run, I do hold Warriors in higher esteem. Unpopular opinion I know! Fav tracks are the title track, and Cold Warning. The single didn’t fare well, 32 I think? It’s a good song, but maybe not a good single. The chorus was catchy, but the arrangement was very complicated for pop fans, and I think we all recognise his star was on the wane at that point. Sister Surprise struggled, and after the title track single, My Dying Machine flopped, as did all the singles off The Fury. Tough times for Gary and for fans, as whilst it may have been his….. patchiest…….work, to date, it was still Numan, and it aced most other artists at that time. Deserved more success. Thanks for your review, well presented, as all of yours are, that I’ve seen. Cheers mate, keep well.

Loved the album and both of the singles. The 12" extended version of My Dying Machine is incredible. Brilliant image too. Striking although didn't work quite as well live!!

Berserker, at least on the CD format, seems to have been out of print for a while, as copies have been either hard to find or prohibitively expensive to buy. Until now, with this reissue signalling a timely availability of Berserker once again. Long overdue, in my opinion, and I did order it on Discogs while watching this review. Thank you for a terrific review of a release I didn´t even know existed prior to watching this video.

I love Gary Numan and Berserker was way ahead of its time. The heavy sounds on this record paved the way for what was going to come a good 5 years, if not more, down the line.

I love Numan especially the first 5 albums, but sadly drifted away as for me he moved away from what attracted me in the first place which was the stark dystopian feel to his music. I did rediscover him many years later with his album Pure and have loved most of his albums since.

I feel cheated because this wasn’t released in the US in the 80s. As far as we knew he dropped out of music during that time. I’ve seen concert videos and was blown away by what we missed. A travesty. I love his new stuff too.

A brilliant album, better than “Warriors”
The opening track is way ahead of its time. These were the female backing singer and slap bass years, so not for everyone. I think Numan is a genius, and very humble with it.

A great box set I grabbed when it was released.
The wife and I are great fans of Gary seeing him many times including the Beserker tour up to the recent show last year.
Like fine wine he has improved with age

Terrible album. Muddy sound. Drowned vocals. The decline was in full effect. The all to quick to pass genius period of 79 to 81 was flushed down the lavatory with the Wembly "Farewell" foot shot. 😂😂😂
