lyleaf were called a gimmickābut their 2005 self-titled debut told a far more complicated story.
In this video, we look back at the dark, emotional, and unlikely rise of Flyleaf, the Texas rock band fronted by Lacey Sturm. From Laceyās difficult childhood, addiction, depression, spiritual conversion, and early struggles to the formation of the band, this is the story behind one of the defining alternative rock and hard rock albums of the 2000s.
Before the platinum albums, rock-radio hits, and massive tours, Flyleaf were known as Listen and later Passerby. Lacey Sturm, Sameer Bhattacharya, Jared Hartmann, Pat Seals, and James Culpepper built their following the hard way: playing countless Texas shows, releasing independent EPs, and refusing to let the industry define what kind of band they were supposed to be.
After signing with Octone Records, Flyleaf entered the studio with producer Howard Benson and recorded their self-titled debut album. Released in 2005, Flyleaf introduced fans to āIām So Sick,ā āFully Alive,ā āAll Around Me,ā āCassie,ā āSo I Thought,ā and more. The record blended alternative metal, post-grunge, nu-metal-influenced riffs, massive hooks, Laceyās screams, and lyrics about pain, survival, faith, abuse, addiction, depression, and hope.
But Flyleaf also faced a constant question: were they a Christian rock bandāor simply a mainstream rock band made up of Christians? The group resisted being boxed into one genre, arguing that their music was for anyone dealing with darkness, trauma, isolation, or the search for something better. Their refusal to fit neatly into the music industryās categories became a major part of their story.
āIām So Sickā became a rock-radio breakthrough, while āAll Around Meā took Flyleaf to an even bigger audience. Through relentless touringāincluding runs with Korn, Deftones, Disturbed, Stone Sour, and the Family Values Tourāthe band transformed a slow-burning debut into a platinum success. Their debut album ultimately earned RIAA platinum certification, while āIām So Sickā reached No. 12 on Billboardās Mainstream Rock chart.
Was Flyleaf unfairly dismissed because of their faith, their female frontwoman, or because they simply did not fit the usual 2000s rock formula? Let me know your memories of Flyleaf, Lacey Sturm, āIām So Sick,ā and All Around Me in the comments.

Nice! Thanks so much Sid for covering them. Just suggested Flyleaf in the comments a few weeks back and then I just saw Lacey as a guest on the Garza Podcast after that. Excellent band all around. Would love for them to do a new album with Lacey back.

I saw Flyleaf earlier this summer and it was a pretty fun time. Before they closed their set with "All Around Me", Lacey told the story of how she found God, and although I found it to be kind of corny and slightly preachy since I'm not a christian myself, I did find it pretty touching hearing her recount it.

I feel like growing up there was a lot of Post Grunge and Nu Metal bands but so few of them have female leads, especially in the early 2000s chicks were not getting radio play on the rock stations. Evanescence was about it. Personally I think Flyleaf and little Lacey screamed her way into the scene and broke that glass ceiling. Forever underrated band.
I think they just did a 20-year reunion and are still touring.

I've been watching your videos every day during my lunch break. They're the perfect length, and there's a new one almost every day. And on the days you don't upload, there's plenty in the archive that I either haven't seen yet or don't mind watching a second time. I really appreciate the channel and all the work you put into it!

A lot of Lacey's solo stuff is heavier than Flyleaf. I remember hearing I'm So Sick when it came out and being impressed with her voice.

Never could stand this group or any of these bands with that Skillet-esque sound.
I personally think all Christian āRockā and all Christian āMusicā sucks in general, IMO. Only Christian group I could ever stand to listen to was Switchfoot and thatās just only their Mid-2000ās stuff they released when they were at their absolute height of their commercial peak back in the day.

I do like the voice, but so many bands of this era just sound noisy, the guitar distortion is so heavy you can't hear any fucking melody. I could say this about any number of bands from that era

I saw them once in 2006. Pittsburgh PA. They were one of bunch of groups at that years Fam Values Tour. At that time I felt like they were horribly misplaced in that tour contrasting the other groups. I didn't go to specifically see them, and no hate, but I do remember thinking they kind of blew live. I dunno. Maybe they weren't locked in that day. I remember thinking Deadsy was cool AF live that she dayš

Even with all the studio magic, you could still hear her voice crack on the album mix. Yeesh this was a bad band. If this were a secular band, it never would have gotten traction…

The only thing I remember about flyleaf is thinking their drummer was equivalent to a turtle on a fence post, if you know the analogy.
