Flow State Turns You Into a Robot | Ido Portal
Flow state is usually sold as the highest form of performance: effort disappears, thought goes quiet, and the body executes automatically. Ido Portal sees a danger inside that promise. Total immersion can produce extraordinary results, but it can also switch off the part of you that is watching, listening, and consciously present. At that point, the athlete may perform beautifully while functioning like a robot.
Portal explains why repetition and hard work cannot solve that problem on their own. Michael Jordan could shoot thousands of baskets, but every elite player has already passed the hard-work threshold. Steph Curry is not Steph Curry simply because he practiced more. At the highest level, Portal argues, progress requires changing the person who performs, not merely automating another movement. He describes his role as a kind of assassination: breaking the current construct so something less limited can take its place.
The alternative is not to abandon flow. It is to combine absorption with what Portal calls the “watchful tower,” a wider awareness that can contain the body, the room, the task, and the person doing it. Danny recognizes the opposite state when he admits he cannot remember the drive that brought him to the studio. The body completed the route, but conscious presence was missing. That ordinary experience reveals the larger question behind elite performance: if you execute perfectly but are absent from the moment, was it really you?
Portal applies this distinction to basketball, football, skateboarding, podcasting, and everyday life. The goal is not constant inner commentary or forcing yourself to “be here.” It is cultivating a form of attention that can move deeply into a task without disappearing inside it. Flow remains part of the state, but it is no longer the ceiling.
