I was in ER for gallbladder large stone moved out on its own and producing very bad feelings (spent 1.5hrs in ER, no surgery, just got an ultrasound scan and morphine shot). Insurance was billed for $27000 (yes – twenty seven thousand) and my out-of-pocket was 3K.
So… trying to break yourself intentionally… I'd not recommend that with US healthcare and billing.
