FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR (1986) The Movie That Made Every ’80s Kid Want a Spaceship
Before it became the fun chrome-spaceship adventure every ’80s kid remembers, Flight of the Navigator started with one of the darkest premises in family movie history: a 12-year-old boy disappears in 1978, comes home in 1986, and hasn’t aged a single day.

I saw the movie in school when I was in, maybe, second grade. I don't recall the plot; just the silver, almond-shaped spacecraft.

7:56 if they would’ve made SJP’s character the same girl that David had a crush on in ‘78, that would’ve been a huge payoff at the end.
1978: David is afraid to approach Jennifer Bradley.
1986: “you know, David, I had the hugest crush on you back then. I kept waiting on you to ask me out, but you never did…”
1978: “Before I get on the boat with you guys and set off fireworks, there’s someone I need to say hi to first.”
It would show the audience that his “deficiencies” at the beginning (hating his brother AND shy around girls) have been eliminated by his experience on the ship.

Seeing the ship brought in on the flatbed was just chefs kiss for a kid who grew up in the 80s and wanted to be an astronaut. Anything NASA related was an instant watch for me….

Flight of the Navigator and Explorers were some of my favorite movies as a kid. I used to imagine what it would be like to have a spaceship that can go anywhere.

Found 1988 VHS rental, Hector Arkansas…. I was eight years old. I absolutely love this movie and have passed that love on to my kids.

I actually remember watching this for the first time at the Egyptian Theater in Boise, ID (we were living there from July 1983 through July 1990) when it came out. I was 11 years old at the time.

Saw this with my Dad in the theater, I do remember how eerie the being scene was when he came back to his family. But what a fun kid sci fi movie. I am 46 now and I think I should watch this with my 15 and 16 year daughter and son! I definitely remember knowing it was pee wee Herman’s voice…. It’s always interesting to see what teenagers think of 80s movies. Thanks for the video it brought back happy memories.

definitely one of my favorite movies as a kid. i even remember seeing it in the theaters and of course whenever it was on network Tv we taped it and watched all the time. I could tell that was pee wee herman's voice. In retrospect it's actually kinda lame that he just repeated his trademark voice.

Had this on VHS. Will look for the '19 re-release! Couldn't remake or "reboot"(??! 🤢) this film. Could "modernize" the story, but it would a remake of Atari's Adventure on a PS5. It's a time-capsule that won't mean much to the people who didn't live in that era. Oh, and Paul Reubinfeld really was phenomenal in everything ❤🙏

People say movie now days suck but forget or don't even realize that there were plenty of movies that came out in the 80s and 90s that didn't do well in theaters and became big hits on home video or airing on tv.

I remember begging my old man to record this on a Sunday night on prime time on the Disney channel. They played one half of the movie and made you tune in for the second half the next week, which we recorded. That tape still exists in a box somewhere, commercials and all.

Growing up in the 90’s, I had a VHS copy I practically wore out. Then, it became a bonding film with my now husband. I actually recognized Paul Reuben’s voice when I watched growing up because I watched Peewee’s Big Adventure and Playtime. That iconic laugh…. But yes, the ship design and effects of this film I don’t think can ever be replicated. It’s one of my favorite spaceship design for the reason that it does feel alive, its own character. I hope they NEVER remake it. It is a piece of it’s time and that is alright

I adore the soundtrack for this film, especially "Robot Romp", the song that plays during David's break out of the secured bedroom to the spaceship's lab. The song is a total classic!

Hearing an American say "whad is up" instead of "what's up" is funny, esp these days with so many acronyms & abbreviations, like blog, vlog, clog smog, lol, brb, etc (yes IK 2 are real words).
that said, thank u kindly for doing this, so many poorer "reviewers" are afraid of doing this movie for some odd reason

I saw this in the movies back in the day! I know the Back to the Future joke: "'Who's president in 1985?' 'Ronald Reagan' 'Ronald Reagan!?! The actor? Who's vice president, Jerry Lewis?'" is iconic, but the question from this movie with the kid saying Jimmy Carter, and the adults looking at each other always hits me
