Fleetwood Mac: ‘Rumours’ | Beneath the Covers

Classic Album Review | April 30, 2026

An album that is very much defined by the mysticism of its sleeve with Mick Fleetwood’s pendulous balls.

I had occasionally wondered if I was the only person on earth who thought this album was vastly overrated, it appears not. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few outstanding tracks on there but as a whole it feels somewhat mediocre and undeserving of it’s reputation, when I listened to it after a long break I remember being rather disappointed.

At this mornings excellent Patreon meeting (and I must say to any who isn't a Patron, listening to Sam and Victor et al tell stories at the meeting is worth the 15 bucks per month alone.) you asked what "Summer Music" was. "Go Your Own Way" is summer music.

A little bit of trivia – until the remix of Dreams spent almost 2 years on the charts recently, Fleetwood Mac had only had 1 top 10 hit single in Australia – and that was "Tusk"

We'll never see the likes of Rumours, again as you can't easily write songs about the personal affairs of your fellow band members when you're a bloke on your own producing tracks on a laptop.

I understand I am in the minority — and happily so! — but Fleetwood Mac ended after the release of "Heroes Are Hard to Find." While Lindsey Buckingham is a fine guitar player, I've always found Ms. Nicks to be far too self-absorbed. I had to play this "FLEETWOOD NICKS" album so much on radio that I simply cannot handle hearing anything by this configuration of the group today. I s'pose, though, that just leaves more of this "stuff" for others to "enjoy."

I wonder if I’d like this album much more had it not been overplayed via commercial radio and supermarket Muzak endlessly ad nauseam. Nonetheless, for me Lindsey Buckingham remains one of the most unsung, underrated guitarists of that era; extremely versatile, technically perfect and his acoustic fingerpicking work still gives me goosebumps.

I knew it was popular but 45 million sales? I still prefer the Peter Green stuff but thats just me.Do you remember Mick Fleetwood co hosting the Brit awards with I think Samantha Fox in the 80,s? Fame for all the wrong reasons!

I remember discovering this album as a kid and being obsessed with it for a while. Alot of it has been played to death now. I do agree with The Chain & G.D.W. being standouts. I will say whenever I hear Dreams I still really love the drum and bass lines. So subtle but strong at the same time….great stuff Barry
