Pick # 26 – Steely Dan – Everything Must Go

Day 5 so today an artist born just around 4 miles from me (i'm sure he said Priesthill when we chatted after a local gig he played primarily for family at Bourbon Street just off George Square) but emigrated with his family as so many Scots have done through time. He's still very much active, and frankly was the blood transfusion a beloved US pomp/prog rock band needed after they floundered and now rediscovered their mojo with him in the ranks.
For today it's his last solo album.
Larry Gowan- the Good Catches Up. He had moved away from the proggier sounds and influences by Lost Brotherhood and moved into mor traidtional harder rock, commercial and catchy. And this album is no different but still features his strong vocal delivery and impressive instrumental and songwriting talents. Some really strong popish hard rock tracks feature her. Guns n God with some welcome (but thankfully brief to most ears!) bagpipe flavouring, the fantastic title track, I'll be there in a minute, Pigeon, and one of my favs Put it Where the Love Don't Shine, with it's lovely bass line and tone and the satisfying hint of grit in voice now during the chorus. Laura doesn't do it for me but this is a really strong album and a surprise he didn't sell well in US. I get it might not have been picked up big time worldwide, but plenty of family and expatriate Scots would have spread the word. Thoroughly recommended, not just because he's a Scot. His impact on Styx should convince you if you doubt my impartiality!

It's been very quiet for almost 10 years. It's a great Folk Rock album, so I wish that it will not be the last one.

The Meat Purveyors – Someday Soon Things Will Be Much Worse! – 2006
The final full length studio album from the Alt Country Bluegrass band from Austin Texas, standout tracks include "Fist City" "Liquor Store" "Hanged Man" "Snow in the Door"and a decent cover of Foreigners "Hot Blooded" they have released six albums to date, All Relationships Are Doomed to Fail being my favourite.

For pick #26, I’m going with the second album by the Detroit rock band Rhythm Corps “The Future’s Not What It Used To Be”. Considered an “alternative rock” band, I would put them in the style of The Alarm and early U2. Full of earnestness and spit and anthems of “let’s make the world a better place for all”, but acknowledging it’s not.
Their first album “Common Ground” hit 104 on the US Billboard 200 album chart, and the title track made it to #9 on the Mainstream Rock chart (so much for “alternative”, LOL). Loved the first album, one of my favorites from 1988, so had high expectations for this one. But for some reason, it didn’t hit me as hard as the first one. Maybe the production is a little less polished and crisp, or the songs were less personal at the time, I don’t know. Listening to this week for this list, the songs are as well written and tight as the first, so it must’ve just been a timing thing, not just with me but with the general audience, because it didn’t do anything charts-wise.
Favorite songs are “Hell Is For Heroes” and “Voice of Reason”. Both catchy and the latter actually takes a shot at itself and all the other protest songs: “Now I might think I’m pretty smart, and call this rambling protest art, and that may touch your heart, but songs are only teasing and all them singing stars with their heads on Mars wouldn’t know a crisis if it hit them right between the guitars.”
Another notable one is “Mother”, which refers to “Mother Nature”, basically an environmental protest song.
Lots of acoustic guitars and power chord electric guitars and snare drums, trying to get you fired up about issues and speak out/do something about them. It’s really a shame they only did the two albums. Apparently they still perform and have a semi-active FB page, but no new music since this album, as far as I can find.

Jim Croce – I Got a Name. The lead single was released the day after he died in a plane crash. It hit number 2. Another single was I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song.

26. Whitesnake – Flesh & Blood (2019)
I know David Coverdale’s voice wasn’t and isn’t what it used to be, but he still sounds pretty good here and his last lineup of the band made a very solid album. Not the best, but still pretty damn good.

#26 Reasoning-Adventures in Neverland. A great female fronted prog band from Wales,here with the incredible ex-Karnataka singer Rachel Jones Cohen. She was at this time one of best female vocalists in the UK,together with Anne Marie Helder,Christina Booth and Heather Findlay. Key song: Hyperdrive. 4*

#26 The Smiths – Strangeways, Here We Come
The last studio LP of the brief career of one of the most important bands of the 1980s. Tensions between Marr and Morrissey led to their breakup.
I still remember seeing the video for "Girlfriend In A Coma" in the early 90s, and it became one of my favorite Smiths songs. I first bought a greatest hits album, and only in 2011 did I buy the vinyl of "Strangeways, Here We Come." The album has other great tracks like "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish," "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before," "A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours," and "I Won't Share You."
A worthy and elegant final album.

Perennial favourite, Heartbreaker by Free. Opening with one the foundation stones of rock music, Wishing Well and closing side one with the title track, one of the band’s finest compositions. All held together by Rodgers’ irrepressible vocals.

Day 26 pick is Finyl Vinyl by Canned Heat. Released on Ruf Records it came out April 5 2024. It was intended to be their farewell recording. Members were Fito De La Parra drums. Jimmy Vivino guitar keyboards vocals. Dale Wesley Spalding harmonica guitar vocals and Rick Reed bass. Best songs are One Last Boogie. Goin To Heaven In A Pontiac. Tease Me. Youre The One. When Your 69 and Independence Day.

#26 Ramones – Adios Amigos (1995)
The Ramones final album, Adios Amigos, finds this most underappreciated band going out the way they came in, with brilliant, hooky tunes, stripped-down, sped-up chops, and a great sense of humor. I was truly sad to see this underrated, yet incredibly influential group say "Adios".

Still on My Mind by Dido 1999
Never seen this artist on S.o.T comments, one of life's mysteries!
Not the most prolific of artists, this album being only her fifth in 27 years. Dido has signed a new recording contract though, so maybe a new album soon!
What all her albums have in common is her beautifully written songs and her lovely singing voice.

26. ELO – From Out of Nowhere – Jeff Lynne still has some good tunes in him. I don't listen to this as much as Zoom, which I think is ELO's best Jeff-solo album.
