Facts About Paris Catacombs

Weird History | February 23, 2026

Beneath Paris’s tree-lined avenues and broad boulevards, there lurks a labyrinthine world of tunnels, chambers, and ossuaries: the Paris Catacombs, which are made up of 200 miles of tunnels that have been attracting, terrorizing, inspiring, and hosting generations of Parisians.

The catacombs are probably best known as the final resting place for medieval and early-modern Parisians whose remains were relocated there in the late 18th century. But the catacombs are so much more than that. For centuries, the Paris Catacombs have been a quarry, tourist attraction, hiding place, farm, and art gallery, among other things.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the original try-hard, thought he could conquer Europe but ended up getting buried in the Paris Catacombs, which is basically the 19th-century version of a participation trophy 💀. The Catacombs are like the world's most extra ossuary, because who needs a simple grave when you can have your bones rearranged into a decorative fence? This is what happens when you let a megalomaniac with a Napoleon complex design a cemetery 🗿.

Thank you for the line about the mosque. Most people don't know or want to believe this. Yes, the Muslims tried to save the Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. Anybody telling you they're inherently antisemitic just believes propaganda.

I most definitely would wanna go see the catacombs if I ever travel to Paris. I am clairvoyant (I can’t see, but I can hear, dream, and feel things that others cannot) and I wonder how it would be down there for me.

Anyone remember the name of the semi-secret society mostly consisting of French historians who have the catacombs completely mapped out? I can’t remember – but I’m pretty sure they’re responsible for the movie theatre. They’ve also used the catacombs to sneak into historical sites and restore broken artifacts

I would love to visit the Paris Catacombs. I studied archaeology in college and I've always found the catacombs really interesting. I can't help but wonder what kind of data could be collected from the remains and what they could tell us about the people buried there. Since there are so many bodies though, I can't imagine how long that kind of project would take.

I wasn't a fan but it was very interesting and I learned a lot about Paris's history by going down there. Yes, I'm a bit of a wimp and felt uneasy. I kept thinking about all of those people, their lives, and who they once were.

the fact about the palais the chaillon is false though. The working movie theatre did exist in 2004, but its not under pailas de chaillon. Its more to the south, closer to the official guide catacombs entrance. The cinema is located near la plage and has art on the walls about the movies that were watched there
