My favorite contrast is about the wildlife.
Novice: "OHNOES THERE MIGHT BE BEARS OR MOUNTAIN LIONS I NEED MACE AND GUNS AND AND AND–!"
Experienced outdorsman: "Bears? They're just oversized raccoons after your snacks. Now, a moose on the other hand…"

My best memories of camping were when I was 17. Just take a blanket or sleeping bag, beer, herbal smoking substance, and fireworks. Who needs a tent?
After I had kids I had to bring a tent and skip the herbal smoking substance and fireworks.
    They loved it.

I….I actually did forget my tent one time. Luckily another camper had an emergency sleeping bag, so I basically stuffed my bag into a bigger plastic bag. Rained the whole time.

So i'm an eagle scout with 6 50 miler awards and all the national outdoor awards (except for riding lmao) and a couple of silver and gold devices
and I have went on more than 6 50 milers
Philmont actually wasn't that fun gear wise becuase I had to carry all this extra gear.
But still fun that I could hang out with me amigos
I've done all the washington sections of the pct
planning to go with a friend to eventually go do the whole darn thing, we actually "Escorted" our outdoor coordinator who did the whole thing and even brought his daughter along (13 I believe, this happened in the summer) for about 300 ish miles. Me, a 15 year old, his parent, and my friend did 2 20 mile days after we hit the border and dropped off our coordinator's family. It was a lot of fun.
Backpacking is my life now. That and video games and other shit haha.
But seriously, this video was me right there. The experienced camper. He actually uses some of the same equipment I use.

This is a sick joke! Before the video even began, a commercial for Applebee's. As if that, in itself wasn't tragic enough, they are playing Ozzy Osbourne's opening to "Crazy Train". So, so very wrong…

I feel like both of these guys. I count peanut M&Ms as protein lol. Also me with ridiculous UL gear while carrying camera gear that weighs as much as my pack haha. The duality of camping.

Thru-hikers and backpackers eat ramen and tortillas and boxed mashed potatoes portioned out into little baggies. Fresh vegetables like kale, tofu, and smoothies are just a dream for the next time you get into a town. Hahaha.

I love your stuff (really liked the Midwest vs. East Coast stuff), but must point out that not all of us long-time hikers are organic-obsessives. We're just obsessed with hiking efficiently: I don't have any friends that waste money or give a thought to "high-end" environmentally toilet paper or food. We DO try to keep our gear as light as possible; you would, too, if you had to haul it up a mountainside or schlep it around for 4 days…

In the 80s my church had a youth pastor who was an Appalachian Trail thru hiker. He decided to take us kids on a backpacking trip. I had camped before but never backpacked. Of course our packs weighed a ton despite our best efforts. I'll never forget there were a couple girls who brought their water in glass Mason jars. I'm actually camping tonight…. at the same location. I have a queen size air mattress, movies, and internet. Times have changed a bit.

As an "expert" camper myself… The "expert camper" character in this video seems more like a beginner camper to me. ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰

My old climbing partner used to drink his dish water, he didn't use soap to clean the pot, but he drank the water with remnants of dinner because he refused to dump it on the ground. RIP old friend.
