When I first watched this video, I was offended slightly because there ARE reasons to why people don't do things, but upon watching it again a year later, I think I'd have to agree with you for the most part. Excuses are made to justify actions. If someone really wanted to do or change something, they would take the steps to, even if they never reach their goals in the end. Really hope i can get past my habit of making excuses and start moving forward with my goals after realizing this though XD.

The message of self responsibility is the most empowering one there is. It is the acknowledgement of someone being a capable person. Read Nathaniel Branden, preferably "Honoring the self"!

The dumbest excuse ever is "EVERYONE"S NOT PERFECT LIKE YOU!", as if having any criticism of anything, ever, means you think you're perfect. Nobody who has a backbone says that crap.

i dont like the word excuse, i feel like its just a way for someone to shit on the mistakes you've made or the things you've done wrong by calling it something that no one wants to hear. if i set out to do something and it doesn't go as planned, there are reasons why it didnt go as planned. If i say i wanna do something and i dont do it there are reasons why i didnt do it. either way you try and you either succeed or fail. period. the reasons for failing, or 'excuses' dont really matter at all, either you eliminate the things that would prevent you from accomplishing any set goal or you set another goal, either way theres no need to tell someone what they already know. let them be the success or the failure that they want to be, based on what their goals are or were in the first place

I have an ex that used to do this all the time. When we started dating she was really strong and independent but as time went on she has an excuse for everything from gaining a ton of weight to starting to smoke after having quit for over 2 years. THE most annoying quality a human being can have

Yes, I know I should keep smoking but that is only because I like to smoke.
I love this video too. I am gonna watch more. I could hang with this cat….if he doesn't mind cigarette smoke (which by the way, there is no proof of second hand smoke doing anything more than making your threads smell)…

I've been that person. I've been working on NOT being that person ANYMORE. In spite of my actual setbacks, they make it harder and different, but I've done it before and I'll do it again.

This video makes me think of YOLO. The ultimate excuse. Ugh. Also, my husband and I just had a discussion about how people misuse the phrase catch-22 all the time. Most of the time, it is exactly what you said. Making excuses, not being stuck in a completely impossible situation.

    My excuses:

I smoke because at first it helped me qui pot. Now that I've done it, I'm just too chickened to quit smoking. So: No relevent reason.
I wish I'd lose weight. But I hate excercise because I'm never satisfied enough about my performances, wich you might imagine are very low. Though I try to eat as healthy as I can, but, I know, it's not enough. So: What a shitty excuse.
I try to write as much as I can but my medication keeps me from concentrating enough (see, I have Bipolar disorder). So: Almost a good reason, but I could try more.
I try to save my money but I'm always consuming stuff I don't reaaly need. So: An other shitty excuse.
I try to keep my room clean but then I can't find where I have put my stuff. So: Stupid excuse, I shoul just put it where it was after using it.
I try to keep my new years resolutions, wich I do, but only for the first month. Then there's always something coming up that makes me "forget" about it. So: I'm just untrustworthy.

Man! I have so many issues! My resolution about it: Hum… Make that resolution on january 1st 2015.

It actually feels good to admit to yourself and even others "I fucked up". The thing about fucking up is you can always do better. Excuses are excuses and that could go on forever. You have to admit your shortcomings in order to be able to improve upon them.

I was going to fess up to making excuses lately and admit you were totally right, t1j, but then as I was thinking about the excuses I was going to confess to I realized they were all to the same person, who happens to be a judgmental loudmouth who wouldn't stop badgering me on three separate occasions. I think when the other options are "get harassed even more for the next half hour" or "tell someone to shut the fuck up before you slap them out of sheer frustration", a few excuses are justified. Better to be lazy and passive than deal with an asshole or be an asshole yourself, because assertively telling her to stop did not stop her. She just kept fucking going. It was insane. Her husband and child must have the patience of Mother Teresa or some shit.

When I make excuses, they're not really excuses like this. The thing is that I hate not taking accountability for myself. In fact, I'm only just learning how to take excuses rather than beating myself up over every little detail. For instance, if I'm suicidal and can't motivate myself to get out of bed, and I feel completely trapped and unable to focus on anything… that's probably a good excuse to take some time off and reevaluate my life or take care of myself until my mindset is in a better place.

This is different but very similar: people who react to every encounter with someone as if they are being judged and proclaim "you don't know me! You don't know what I've been through!" I see it on Facebook, I hear people say it. I feel like saying "Calm down, you don't know the person you're saying that to, you dont know what they have been through, everyone has been through something and no one has to treat you special because of what they don't know you've been through. People can still disagree with you, people can still ask questions, people may still offer constructive criticism. CALM. DOWN."

I use the truth as an excuse most of the time. For example, instead of saying that I can't do something because I'm too busy, I might say that I won't do it because I'm lazy as shit, can't convince myself to do it, and still sort of hoping that I could get away with not doing it. Either way, saying "oops" or "I'll go ahead and get it done" just doesn't work for me.
