How did the drive to reproduce unlock the incredible beauty and complexity of life on Earth?
Official website: https://to.pbs.org/4sE152j #novapbs
Sex changed everything—evolutionarily speaking, that is. By shuffling the genetic deck it unleashed variation, fueling diversity and throwing evolution into overdrive. But how did this radical innovation begin? From the first exchange of genes to the origins of males and females, uncover the evolutionary leaps that reshaped life. Follow the evolution of the ostrich to reveal how the egg became a breakthrough that allowed life to conquer land—and how feathers transformed into tools of courtship before they were ever used for flight.

Female ostrich do not lay their eggs in one clutch. They tour the males in the area, breed with them and then when the egg is ready to be laid they do so and leave it with the male. The male incubates the eggs each one from a different female. Since it may take several days to collect the eggs there is the chance that the ones laid first would hatch first and they would have to leave the other ones behind but that is not the case. When they are getting close to hatching they start calling to each other, while in the shell, and that increases the rate the ones behind grow so they can all be ready at the same time. Unlike raptors and many other birds they are not in competition with the last to hatch getting fewer and fewer resources until it dies.
An unfertilised ostrich egg is the largest single cell.

Really disappointed to see Nova jumping on the AI bandwagon. Shame on you.

I agree… the use of GENERATIVE AI basically makes me immediately stop watching a video. So … unless you want to lose the vast majority of your audience, I suggest you not use AI anymore. If I see it. again that will be the last video I watch from the channel

Too bad you had to ruin it with the usage of generative AI. I was watching this on TV and immediately turned it off once I saw that "AI Visualization" tag.
Genuinely pathetic, NOVA. I expected better.

I'm so tired of veiled ideologies. At least two. First, the materialist premise that inanimate matter gives rise to both life and consciousness is, finally, coming under serious scrutiny. Yay for getting us out from under the Church, but a cosmic baby went with the water when we decided to insist we live in a completely random, meaningless universe. Then second, the emphasis on everything that might weaken the preponderance of the binary in the reproductive world. Every person, regardless of how they conceive their identity along the multiple vectors of a human personality, deserves respect and compassion. Trying to normalize the statistical anomaly of the biologically non-binary is NOT the way to create a compassionate society. Compassion is the way to create a compassionate society, especially toward those who have the dubious gift of feeling like they're in the wrong body. Many interesting things can come from having such a seat in the great auditorium, but please, let's not pretend that it's somehow a good thing to feel like you're in the wrong body.

It's nice you guys disclose you use AI, but using generative AI is gross. Pay a human or find another way to illustrate your point.

Nice documentary, but there are no real scientific evidence for many of the theories that are presented in the video. Has anyone actually observed a scale turning into a feather or an amphibian's egg turning into a reptile/bird egg?

Okayyy…and eukaryotic cells just poof! 💨 out of nowhere show up….and zero exploration of how/why? 🙄 Embarassing, PBS/Nova.
