The Europeans being exactly the same over 1000 years in the future is such a ridiculous detail that really ties it all together. It absolutely still would have been funny if they were in future clothes but that small bit just makes it perfect.

Updated twist: it actually ended up being a South African who wenr up & started colonizing Mars & killing & liquefying all it's intellectually advanced, peaceful inhabitants to make petroleum products. But it wasn't to make fuel — it was to make a special shade of red he wanted to paint his "cyber rockets".
