Enemy Pilots Become Friends After Strange Encounter | Tales From the Bottle

Qxir | October 24, 2024

A tale both beautiful and strange emanating from WWII – but lasting for decades afterwards.

“The Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler incident occurred on 20 December 1943, when, after a successful bomb run on Bremen, 2nd Lt Charles “Charlie” Brown’s B-17 Flying Fortress (named “Ye Olde Pub”) was severely damaged by German fighters. Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler had the opportunity to shoot down the crippled bomber but did not do so, and instead escorted it over and past German-occupied territory so as to protect it. After an extensive search by Brown, the two pilots met each other 50 years later and developed a friendship that lasted until Stigler’s death in March 2008. Brown died only a few months later, in November of the same year.”

Such an amazing story, this hit me in the feels for sure.

This is a true example of honor, bravery, and morals. Standing up for what you believe in and doing the right thing when you have absolutely no incentive to do so.

The true definition of chivalry and love for your fellow human being.

There’s a book called A Higher Call that covers the stories of both these men, the author interviewed them both and they really have incredible stories even beyond this amazing incident.
I remember Franz wrote that even against the Soviets there was a strong degree of comraderie with enemy pilots. It’s been years so I don’t remember exact quotes, but I know he very much disliked destroying a plane in a way that would burn the pilot, he and the old guard of the Luftwaffe preferred to either allow them to bail out, or to finish them to spare them burning in the cockpit. He said most of the older pilots who had been trained pre war found it unbecoming of an airman to kill someone parachuting down. It really seemed like those prewar trained pilots had a strong sense of chivalry when it came to air combat, which I suppose makes sense coming from WWI’s tradition. It was surprising to me that they even felt this way about the Soviets, when that’s not typically the way any other Germans treated them as enemies. So I guess Franz must’ve felt that the bomber had already made its run, and killing the crew would have done little to save Germany at that point.
