Dog Day Afternoon: Did He Rob a Bank for Love?

Matt Baume | November 9, 2025

The movie Dog Day Afternoon features Al Pacino as a bank robber whose summertime heist goes terribly wrong. But he’s no ordinary criminal: One of the film’s biggest twists is that he’s robbing the bank to pay for his transgender girlfriend’s surgery. And the even bigger twist … it all really happened. Based on a real life bank robber whose queer heist stunned the world, Dog Day Afternoon was on the cutting edge of a revolution in film — changing the way audiences saw queer characters. But that revolution was a lot more fragile than anyone realized. This is the story of Dog Day Afternoon, the real-life queer caper that helped change American film — and the forces that are still trying to change it back.

This was such a great, in depth, and thoughtful piece about this film. Something personal that is related to the 70s reaction to the queer content is that my mother took me to see many violent films of the era as they were first released. Serpico, Dirty Harry, the Godfather all come to mind. I was born in late '67, so i was very little. A lady who lived with us took me to see Dog dDay Afternoon, which came out when i was just 8. My mother lost it that i saw it, not because of the violence, or the adult themes and complications, but over the miniscule queer content. She had such a steong reaction, but I only had nightmares about the horse head in a bed when I was a kid.

If I had a dollar for every time someone on threads or social media said this man was a hero I could buy a Time Machine to go back in time and smack John in the face for being a violent chaser. For all the good he may have done, I can’t overlook how everyone I’ve ever seen otherwise say he was a good partner

Matt – is there something strange going on with your channel? Whenever I try to put one of your videos on my second monitor while I do other things on my first, YouTube keeps encountering a playback error. However, no other channel I subscribe to has this issue, only yours. I don't trust YouTube as far as I can throw it, so I wanted to just maybe say a heads up in case there's something going on. I don't know what that would be, and I hope this really is just an unfortunate coincidence and I'm the only one this happens to, but in case there IS something, I wanted to tell you and have it written down!

Lots of sad, toxic things going on for these people…but the several attempted bank robberys are pure comedy dropping the gun having it going off and running away, going to a 2nd bank just to get noticed by a family friend…obviously all of this is sad and tragic…but still pretty funny.

I wrote a paper about this movie during my freshman year of college. My English class was themed around true crime (one of my least favorite genres) and I was desperate to find a topic that wasn’t a gruesome unsolved murder. I ended up finding this movie and being really sucked in by the way it told the story of these people in such an empathetic way, a far cry from some of the slop we were forced to put up with. At 18 I didn’t do the best research, and I surely didn’t make the most coherent arguments I could have within my 5 pages, but this movie always stuck with me. Thank you for doing this story justice in a way I never could. God bless.

This movie was fucking amazing. I’m very surprised about “John” being an absolute piece of shit. “Al Pacino” definitely made me think otherwise. Underrated performance

I have been lucky enough to meet and converse with Chris Sarandon, who played Sonny’s wife Leon, and he is a huge supporter of trans folks to this day.
    Happy pride my friends 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈
