   I was born in 1965 and only remember his early 70s albums from the sound of them flowing along the upstairs landing from my (8 years older) sister's room. The sequence of Hunky Dory, Ziggy & Alladin Sane has remained for me as his finest hour; the folk-glam hybrid of the first (perhaps my favourite but what does it matter); through the grimy rock opera of Ziggy to the American glam of the last (Panic in Detroit is my current fave, though that will, no doubt, change). For me, this is a pinnacle of popular music as a whole. I must admit that the journey into soul, the Thin White Duke and Berlin Trilogy left me; maybe cold or maybe just uninterested, while his mainstream return with Scary Monters and the colossus of Let's Dance, though commercial and catchy and I bought them anyway, could never hope to equal his earlier work and I admit to the rest of his output not really touching me. To be honest, if he had just produced my three favourites, it would be more than enough to earn the status of god. To have provided a framework for 'art-rock' and the rest just turns that from god to God. I have been slowly catching-up with the brilliance of his later work and probably won't manage it in my lifetime. My mother complained about how embarrassed she felt, buying this album with a 'half naked hermaphrodite' in the gate-fold, but I'm sure happy she did.

   A question possibly only eclipsed in stupidity by Trump, Musk, and the rest. David Bowie was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century and kept producing great work into the twenty-first. Is your title just click-bait? If you are serious, I'm not going to waste my time. Life is too short. The problem, I would have to watch the video to find out and my time is too precious for that.

    I was never a Bowie fan and I'm still not keen on his '70s stuff (ik, unpopular opinion). He is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Of course he still bloody matters!

    Good and well presented overview of Bowie’s career. Shame Buddha Of Suburbia is missed though, as it always seems to be. Musically probably his best work with Low a close second which is of course only my own personal view. As for the particular period of Bowie career which means the most to me? It’s got to be the Ziggy / Aladdin era. You don’t unleash such an important, seismic and influential explosion of music and imagery onto the music scene at that particular time in history and really expect to be remembered for anything else despite his equally good work which followed it. Of course it probably helps if you were there, totally mind blowing on many an easily influenced young fan back then.

    I enjoyed your video but one Can't skip the Diamond Dogs period. Halloween Jack and the concert show. any brief biography on Bowie must include that period to have credibility. So many documentaries seem to skip from Ziggy character to thin white duke and leave out Halloween Jack.

    Of course I love Ziggy Stardust and Station to Station, but also my tiptop favorites are Reality and The Next Day. Those albums don’t get nearly enough love for all the amazing songs they have on them. I also find myself coming back to Blackstar a lot. Oh and Diamond Dogs I love now that I think about it!

    Hard to pick a favorite era for Bowie. However if I have to pick only one, it might be his creative rebirth in the 90s, particularly exemplified by the “Outside” and “Earthling” albums. I also really enjoyed the early 2000’s “Heathen.” It seemed after he married Iman he was finally happy and grounded, not striving for pop success nor needing to put on a character (Outside’s different character perspectives notwithstanding). However, he was still free to be creative and push boundaries. Though his album “Hours” generally doesn’t get a lot of love and is often ranked low in ranked album lists, it also is good; but especially so when have played through the computer game “Omikron: The Nomad Soul” for which it is essentially the soundtrack, with Bowie also playing a part in the development of the game as well as being a character in it. The “Outside” album requires at least a few listen-throughs to really appreciate. It also requires reading through all the liner notes, a little booklet. It really must be listened to as a coherent whole, something that used to be more of a practice before people started atomizing music and picking isolated songs from here and there for their Spotify playlists.

    Brilliant summary of Bowies career. As a lifelong fan, I'd highly recommend this as an education to those unfamiliar with Bowie.

    I remember the new years eve after David Bowie passed. I said this is going to be the first year without Bowie. That was a hard death to accept. Great video! 🔥

    After ten years since our death, 99% of us will be forgotten about as if we never existed. David Bowie is still around, people talking about him and listening to his music.

    Been revisiting Let's Dance. It's as if Bowie took a mainstream pop format, subverted it and made it his own. It's better with each listen within that context. All that said, my favourite Bowie album is Station to Station. "In this age of grand delusion, you walked into my life, out of my dreams".

    I'm 45 and he still matters to me. I still get teary-eyed if I think about his death too long. He's always in my rotation on my phone and I often wear my "Bowie Bowie Bowie" tshirt. I deliberately skipped some of his albums over the years so that I can always have something new to discover and keep him feeling alive. I listened to "Outside" for the first time during the pandemic and loved it. His art is forever alive but I do worry about all these new kids on the planet being only consumed by their tik toks and whatnot. They're missing out on so much great art and culture. Just my opinion.

    I'm almost 70 and I've loved David Bowie since I was 15, more and more every day. Bowie is unique, inimitable, and one of a kind. His life is like a constellation of characters, events, songs, albums, concerts, inventions. For me, there's no other rock musician on his level, because 'Bowie Is'.
