Do These Kinds Of People Just Suck?!

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | November 21, 2025

Do these kind of transplanted stars just generally suck at music? I have a few opinions on this matter, and it may not be what you think. Today I’m taking a look at one of the biggest social media stars of all time Charli D’amelio, who has just released her debut single “If You Ask Me To”. This isn’t my kind of music or necessarily yours, but let’s have a chat about what’s going here. I’d love to know what you think in the comments, please!

    Jesus Christ Hawkins

You’re reviewing music. artists, and play two seconds of their music, sometimes don’t even play the song, and resume talking about yourself or obscure tacitly related music trivia

It’s very difficult to not condemn you for talking too much or not having enough substance when you do

“Because it's not the music that matters anymore. People don't care about the music itself anymore, but about who makes the music. The public is more interested in celebrities and how a certain artist is more famous than music" – Herbie Hancock

Why do people buy into "singers" that cannot sing without autotune and a plethora of other electronic assistance. Also, the "music" is bargain basement elevator /supermarket background sounds. Basically, this track and all like it are GARBAGE

No idea what tick tock is apart from an interwebby thing, this song was bloody awful. If this is how "ver kids" find music these days Simon fucking Whassisname has won.

I used to find new bands by going to gigs. I'd search the NME before travelling to Bath and buying actual tickets from an old boy in a dusty office who's probably long gone.

Unfortunately, many small venues have shut down and the ones remaining are charging stupid money. Pixies were playing in cardiff last year and wanted £120 odd. For that money I'd expect them to play in my front room whilst Frank Black hand fed me grapes. The Who are playing just down the road from me later on in the year – 240 quid for the pleasure of standing in a fucking field, probably whilst it's pissing down. I appreciate that albums don't sell so well these days so they make their money from touring, but old boys like me who were regular gig goers don't bother now, we actually still buy LPs

Thought about going to Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs in Bristol later in the year. £17.50 a ticket seems fair, but the venue wanted another four and a half quid for booking fees and charges, and I have to print my own bloody ticket so they have done fuck all to earn that money. Won't pay it on principal, fuck the venue, don't fucking moan to me when you close down but it's a crying shame for Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, best band I've heard in the last decade.

Rant over, keep up the good work Mr Hawkins.

Obviously we all hear music differently, but it's mind-boggling to me that anyone hears anything in this type of music. It's SO generic and homogeneous, and lyrically trite beyond belief. I guess I can maybe understand a 12 year old girl who's never had any exposure to meaningful and more serious music think this is the most profound and deepest song out there that speaks directly to her soul, but as far as I'm concerned, everybody else should be bored to tears 5 seconds into this music video. Everything about this song is recycled template shite. It's been done at least 1000 times already, and it's boring, boring, BORING.

Hi Justin, long time enthusiast 1st time commentator. Please give Kylie some recognition for being one the most successful artists of the last 4 decades. Keep up the good work, merry Christmas dude.

I read an article a few years back that talked about modern pop music being based on super familiar chord progressions and simple (nursery rhyme like) melodies. Backed by a four to the floor kick drum. That will make people instantly like it as there is a familiarity and the 4 to floor kick makes them move… I see this most days with my wife and as a muso its painful… specially when I comment and then get "Well they make money from it" hahaha…

It's not bad, but it's a Olivia Rodrigo knock off.

But my issue is what it's been for decades now. . . You can do whatever you like but have the passion in whatever your project is. So often music seems to be a bi-product.

Feels like we are all doomed as musicians sometimes, when this is the music dominating you tube etc! Got to just keep doing what you love for that reason only with zero expectations and the joy of the art …seems being popular is over rated these days lol

I wish you would not give time to this stuff (I hesitate to call it music). The audience for this welter-weight sound is comprised of adolescent girls. It's simply market-oriented. Do you think anyone will be listening to this kind of thing next year or ever again? You are too generous to the detritus you review. I think you should simply call it like it is. BTW, you are one of the most articulate (and disarming) and entertaining personalities of the YouTube reviewing genre. You are the P.G. Wodehouse of rockers. Keep going.
