Disney’s Animatronics: A Living History

Defunctland | December 16, 2025

In the 1960s, Walt Disney carried the torch of one of humanity’s oldest pursuits, the search for mechanical life. The result was Audio-Animatronics, a new breed of robots designed to mimic life.

In this first part of a two-part exploration into living machines in Disney Parks, Kevin explores the history of automatons and the initial development of Disney’s Animatronics.

an unbelievably prescient and timely video. Going to be turning this over and over in my head as we keep moving bullishly and apparently irrevocably into an AI future.

my grandpa, Dale Frandsen, was a genius with computer coding and all the likes, he worked on codes for massive missiles that never missed their targets. he also visited disneyland for work. i dont know what he worked on when he was there, but he was also the person brought to the pentagon when it all shut down so i have a feeling whatever he knew was pretty significant. his mind is going now but his memories from this time are perfect, he will retell the same stories like these every time i visit. super interesting!! wish i knew more to try and make connections haha

Seeing how common animatronics have become in the parks, it’s hard to imagine the absolute religious fear that the Lincoln animatronic struck in people. People were acting as though Walt was out here performing witchcraft and resurrection and doing ungodly things instead of using engineering and stuff.

i legit do not understand what was so gross or immoral about animatronic lincoln. i can see it for someone who believes in the soul, sure, but i dont believe that. is there even a secular argument against this?

I think usamericans are completely insane about presidents in a way that some countries with kings aren't. Everyone absolutely obsessed and full of reverence for just dudes, most of them dead.

Fantastic documentary with super editing and soundtrack. I definitely learned a lot in regards to how Disney created what we consider as robots today. He was the George Lucas of his time. You end with computers taking over, but technically, the Disney crew were already using primitive ones with the use of animtronic programming via magnetic tape and sound waves (which blows my mind in how did they even come up with that idea). The circutry of the machines were computers. So, it would be that new computer advancements brought change to the team, both good and bad.

I love watching Defunctland videos, because it eases the existential dread a bit knowing that the problems of today are not just current year problems, but human problems that existed long before I was born and will continue to plague my offspring for the rest of time…
