Did eBay Humiliate GameStop? + More Retro News!

GenXGrownUp | May 18, 2026

This week on Bit By Bit, GameStop reportedly tried to make a massive move for eBay… and eBay said no thanks. 😬 But that’s only one of this week’s eight bits of retro gaming news!

We’re also looking at new Virtual Boy games on Nintendo Switch Online, Evercade’s final Activision collection, a hidden Wilhelm scream in the Steam Controller, a lost Atari Lynx-style Rampage game, California’s game preservation bill, a Crazy Taxi Game Boy demake, and a GoldenEye-inspired Steam freebie.

It’s business drama, retro preservation, weird controller secrets, and classic gaming surprises — all packed into this week’s Bit By Bit!

Great video George! The Evercade stuff is pretty tempting, but I got so much game stuff in my library to catch up on. I got a major backlog so unfortunately it wouldn’t be a good move to invest in that stuff as tempting as it is.

Nice ep, George! Still liking this “8 bits” approach.

I wonder if under that proposed California law publishers would be able to hand off maintenance (or just hosting of current executable downloads, online gameplay, and patches, or does it require continued updating/patching or new sales and thus a full storefront?) of a game to a non-profit or open-source organization while keeping ownership of the I/P?

Just do you know man you dont have to play the switch VB with the original red, they added other colors like white, green and blue besides the classic red. The white doesnt seem as bad as red or the green imo as the red on the eyes

The Stop Killing Games campaign is one of the best things to happen in recent years. Ross is awesome for getting it started and getting it as far as it's gone.

Agreed on your take for the GameStop attempt on eBay 100%!
The Crazy Taxi Demake looks like tremendous fun … makes me wish I had more time to game 😁
Thanks so much for another great Bit-by-Bit George 👊🏻😎📺🕹️PLP-on 🥳👾
And see ya soon at SFGE

The ebay deal was going to be financed with debt and we know how well that's gone for all these companies paid for by debt right?!

Some great ones this week – Taxi Boy in particular looks like it could be fun!

There's more for GameStop to gain from Ebay than Ebay has to gain from that deal. This sounds similar to how Blockbuster treated Netflix when they tried to get Blockbuster to acquire them, and basically, Blockbuster laughed them out of the building. This was bazaar. I know people speculate that Ebay has not been the same, but financially, they're doing fine. I have pre-ordered Activision Collection 3 at a discount I used to complete that collection. I am glad to see Dragon Fire on it, and I am hoping that some combination of carts in the VS or VS-R will unlock a hidden game. It is not on Amazon US, I used Castlemania again. Songbird is also a good place to pre-order. A screaming controller? COOL! Game on!
