It’s just so relatable across the board. We have all been there at some point just flailing our incompetence into the void without a lifeline. Iconic.

I think I saw this on a MTV reality show for pageant girls who had recently won the national competitions owned by “someone”. She came by to help give the girls confidence about answering tough questions. Her suggestions were equally hilarious.

I was ready to give her so much grace…until I heard her speak as an adult and realized that age has not brought her any more wisdom or grasp of the English language 😬

This went viral my first year of high school. Our history professor at the time loved to pull up whatever video had captured their mind that week, so we used valuable learning time to watch Miss South Carolina do this.

I’m sure one or two of those kids in my class may not be able to find the US on a map still.

I remember when this first happened my cousin on Facebook publicly shamed me for making fun of her 😂😂😂😂I was actually really critical of the American education system 😂😂😂😂

I remember watching this live as it was happening and was screaming at my TV and pulling my knees to my chest because I was so embarrassed for her! I was yelling, “Stop talking!!!“ This clip is a thought in my mind at least once a year since then. I hope she is well.

It’s like the powers that be who coached her said “Ok, don’t ever say “like”, say “such as” instead. And ALSO make sure to mention places like South Africa and Iraq. That’ll make you seem more worldly.”

She’s stuck between two completely different cognitive tasks, and the chaos is a result of that conflict.
    1. Genuinely answering the question e.g. “some people out there don’t have maps”, which leads to the initial panic when she realises it sounded stupid, so she bails and jumps to the second task.
    2. Trying to prove she’s not one of those people that can’t locate the USA on the map, by trying to shoehorn in as many countries she can think of. Unfortunately in her panic those are limited to the country the USA was currently at war with, the last place she went on holiday and an entire continent. At this point she’s in such a state she can’t work out how to bring them in so just reels the names off.
She can’t decide which task she’s on which leads to the wild flip flopping between the two objectives. She then tries to wrap it all up with an answer about education that she wishes she’d started with in the first place. The “such as” is her replacement for the word “like” which someone has told her sounds more classy.
