1:18:04 Neil thank you so much for catching this! It’s that affectionate Michael Scott quote that comes to mind here:

Sometimes I’ll start a sentence and I don’t know where it’s going. I just hope to find it somewhere along the way. Like an improv conversation. An improversation.”
    — Michael Scott

The word that comes to mind for me here is: heuristics.

And I completely agree with your thinking here. Many men in my experience have recoiled into “analysis paralysis” and the safety of one’s own mind to shelter ourselves from the feeling and emotions of our broken childhoods writ large. Like I can’t imagine there exists even one human that hasn’t been touched by the noodley appendage of trauma in their past..? But for writers it’s quite debilitating for me to even admit as just a personal journalist (Gonzo if you will) to write for myself with all my own personal information as a feature that is permitted in what I’m beginning to see as an obsession or possibly addiction to knowledge of The Self over knowledge of MYself.

…and well I guess I’m just appreciating your observations and comment here Simon because it’s helping me crystallize how I too might be unconsciously valuing analysis over experience in ways that are unique to my perspective. Thereby upgrading my heuristics like a proper analysis boy/bot ought to. But then I reflect on that functionality expression and say to myself why the fuck did I have to take the time to say all this to a stranger online? I am about as mystified as Dan is on the reasons for some of our human idiosyncrasies beyond the perfect-imperfection of just Being capable of laughing it all off because taking myself too seriously has only lead to suffering for me and those that love or are connected to me…

54:32 😮 This is a perfect description of how unmitigated anxiety and self-judgement are weaponized. Harmon's version sounds like it attacks outwardly in order to defend himself. Mine turns the knife around and attacks inwardly, shrinking up into a dark corner and feeling irrevocably hopeless. The extraverted version of mismanaged neurosis wants to attack others; the introverted version attacks itself. Either way, that forcing of a script and a false reality onto the external world is the same. Shits fng nuts, and its so sad that humans can be forced into such a warped version of reality. Love the script analogy tho – really well said. Whatever anybody thinks about his writing, harmons a damn genious – a terribly, terribly lost and damaged genius lol

It’s pretty wild to hear Dan Harmon talk about his own personal problems with Ironic detachment then see Rick deal with the same thing in the later seasons. I was watching a video essayist talk about how this ironic detachment is part of a larger problem with society in general.

The whole drink spilling thing is a little too self important and therapeutic thinking, if you spill a drink on me the entire problem is the drink I don't care how you feel or what else you do as long as you solve the problem you just created with me

I get where he’s coming from with his considerations of other people but pain, recovery, overcoming obstacles, etc are all parts of everyone’s story. You can try to be nice but it’s also not your job to take their pain and opportunities for growth.
