    NOTE: Some of these cases are dumb NOT on the victims part, instead, what is dumb is a negligent establishment causing someone harm and trying to sweep it under the rug, only to have it backfire. You'll see what I mean at the near end of the video. EDIT: Stella Liebeck wasn't even driving, and the car wasn't moving!!     if i remember right, stella liebeck wasnt driving, she was in her grandsons car in the passenger seat with said grandson in the drivers seat, they were stationary in the parking lot and she was like, adding sugar and stuff to her coffee

    Heads up, Stella did not even get the money. A judge removed the jury's payment choice of awarding her money equal to coffee sales for 2 days and lowered it to about 600 grand.

    Stella also was not at fault in any way. She was a passenger, not driving, and was completely stationary. The coffee was kept so extremely hot that she had less than 2 seconds to remove all of her clothing to avoid the burns, and had to spend a ton of hospital time for skin grafts and such.

    To top it all off, it would not have mattered if she spilled it, had she drunk it, she would have melted her throat from how hot the coffee was. McDonald's lawyers stated she should have stripped in 2 seconds and that they kept it so hot to account for the time people leave coffee sitting out before drinking it.

    12:27 The jury awarded so much money because of how unsympathetic McDonald's came across. iirc, it's still used in legal practice as an example of how not to treat the plaintiff if they're a person and you (the defendant) are a corporation.

    She actually blamed herself for the spill – which if you know anything about civil litigation, admitting fault is the number one no-no, because it'll be used to drag you through the mud. She was also a nice old lady who just wanted a reasonable 5 figure amount from this multi-billion dollar conglomerate just to cover her medical and legal expenses. McDonald's blamed her for being old, clumsy, and having weak skin. This caused the plaintiff counselors to bring in scientific study that shows that McDonald's kept their coffee at scalding temps. And instead of rebuking the science (which is what companies tend to do, despite the concrete nature of the study), McDonald's was like "I mean, yeah, but who drinks coffee in the car. We make it hot so your coffee is hot when your at work. You know. The place that already has free coffee. Our coffee is so delicious that people stop and buy it so they can have their preferred choice while at the office." (not actual statement, I'm exaggerating).

    Saying that to a jury of middle class office workers showed how out of touch and arrogant the company was. So, I bet that had a lot to do with them losing. So McDonald's funded a smear campaign that made this case infamous. You know I'm right. We hear about stupid cases all the time. So why is this probably the only one you knew, even before clicking on the video? McDonald's funded the smearing of this story. Probably bought segments on the local news around the country. John Oliver showed how that's been a thing for a while and how the local news will read the prop piece verbatim and make it fluffed enough to sound like a news segment. McDonald's spent millions on this case when the original asking amount was like $80k or something, and honestly, in hindsight was actually deserved. That coffee was too damn hot. Plus, who buys coffee to drink 20-30 minutes later?

    4:09 I used to work at Universal Orlando. Universal (unlike Disney World) is dealthy afraid of litigation. I'm being over-exaggerating, but they hated it. I once guided a blind man (like Occipital Lobe blind) through the park with his hand on my shoulder – at his request. I worked front gate at the front gate, so I couldn't stay with him forever, but I felt it cruel to just abandon him. I had no radio, no work phone, none of my management in sight, and Guest Services basically said "nah, he's on his own."

    I read off the music acts performing that night and the stages they were at (this was during the Christian Rock festive held annually in the park, hence why a blind man showed up alone, it was to listen to music). I took him to the stage he thought sounded best. During this time, I had two different Department heads chew my ass out because I was "giving physical contact to a guest" which is strictly forbidden. Yeah, me lightly holding this old man's shoulder while he holds mine; what a sexual predator I was /s. 🙄😒 The man even defended me but was just ignored.

    They called my department. My supervisor (after the incident, at the end of shift) went on and on about legal crap and wrote me up. I was crying at this point. I did a genuinely nice thing, even went through all of my options, and just decided to do what's right, protocol be damned.

    Thankfully, my department's head was a sweetheart. She talked to me the next day behind the break room and told me that the situation was unusual and very few knew the policy. She told me I did a genuinely great thing and dropped the write up and handled the incident report. She told me if it ever happened again, the procedure going forward, as well.

    Sorry for the long story, but yeah Universal actively hates lawsuits. One notable rule was that you could provide no physical assistance with ADA cases. At Disney and SeaWorld, you could provide contact as long as the guest requested it and it wasn't load bearing. Not sure if that's still the case a decade later. Insurance companies are the real blame for this and it's why everything becomes bland and over saturated with buzzkilling rules. Yes, some are for safety, but others are just ridiculous. Blame the insurance industry.

    One of my fondest memories of my grandma kind of reminds me of the Cleanthi Peter’s story 😅
    When I was 12 we went to Universal, and I begged her all day to go in the haunted house with me. This woman is scared of EVERYTHING. At least once a week, one of us grandkids make her jump three feet in the air because we came up behind her a lil too quiet 😂
    Also, important to note, I am on the spectrum and had very severe ptsd due to abuse. Sometimes very dumb things could trigger my fight or flight response. So this was an AWFUL idea. But she finally relented because it was the world’s sunniest day so she assumed it couldn’t be THAT scary. Also probably because she loves me lol.
    We got like three minutes in before some poor guy in a werewolf costume jump scared us and I started hyperventilating. My grandma’s immediate reaction was to drag me to the fire exit a few feet away, almost setting off the alarm 😭😭 the poor employee was SO sweet and escorted us out in a way we wouldn’t be going past any of the scares or the other guests coming in the entrance.
    So if your dumb kid ever convinces you to go in a haunted house, and it ends up being too much, please don’t hesitate to get an employee’s attention, in costume or not. Funnily enough that exp helped me love horror even more, haunt workers are some of the sweetest people on planet earth fr

    Continuous barking dogs can be annoying. We had a neighbor who tied their dog out all day and that dog barked all day.

    When they finally moved (a move of 10-15 miles) they had the dog put down because they did not want their dog in their new house.

    Went to a haunted with a chain saw wielding maniac. He actually started it up when you approached him. My girlfriend complained how dangerous this was.

    I pointed out, there was no chain on the saw.

    I don't care if Stella was driving or her grandson or if they had cup holders or not. The coffee is supposed to be the right temperature for you to drink without getting third-degree burns. The only difference is her legs were burned instead of her mouth.

    what i hate the most about this type of stuff is that people will get millions of dollars for spilling hot coffee on themselves, but when it's actually a necessary lawsuit, it's either ignored or given a very small amount. 6 years ago my granddad had just gotten out of a long stint at the hospital and a rehab center because he needed an open heart surgery. he was barely home for a week when him and my grandmother went to the post office to pick up some mail. it was january and we live in northern Indiana, so it was obviously snowy and icy out. the post office failed to salt the parking lot or the pavement, so when my grandad was walking to the door he slipped, hit his head, got brain damage, and passed away within a couple days. my parents sued the post office (usps) and we only got $25k. yes, that is a lot of money, but it barely covered his medical bills because my parents already had a shit ton to pay from his earlier stay. my grandma was with him when it happened and never spoke about it, but i can't imagine how traumatizing that was. he fought so hard through his heart surgery and rehab and naturally we were super worried, he finally got healthy again, and not even a week later, he died because of some idiot not salting the 10ft of pavement outside the building. lawsuits in the US are a joke

    The Woodrow judgment is simply untrue. It is impossible to receive judgment, and have the claimant be awarded damages of any amount (let alone $500k) without the defendant appearing before court.
