Could Atari Reunite Atari Games?

GenXGrownUp | March 31, 2026

Could Atari reunite the “Atari Games” legacy under one roof? In today’s episode we look at the possibility—not a prediction—that shifting ownership around WB Games could open a path for Atari to bring those classic arcade-era rights back together. What would that mean for re-releases, collections, and preservation?

This is informed speculation based on public reporting and industry history—no deals announced. I’ll break down what would have to happen, who the players are, and why it matters to retro fans. Sorry I'm late to the party on this – I enjoyed this deep dive format. This was a thorough report and I appreciate the research you did on this topic, as it is fascinating to see the lineage of exchange.

Great work George. This was something I've been hoping might happen. Good to know I'm not the only one. I know it's a bit out there. Maybe they won't get the whole thing, maybe part of it. We'll just have to wait and see.

Atari would probably the only one who'd make good use of WB's Gaming Assets. They have a retro arcade division "Digital Eclipse" for handling the Midway/Nether-Realm Studios Games, all the Monolith Backlog would be prime remaster material for Nightdive Studios, and the rest could be handled by that new European Gaming Company Atari recently acquired.

Would be nice if I wouldn't have to go back and emulate the midway games PS2 Legacy Collection. If I could run the collection of Midway games just from my Steam.

So yes gauntlet is also a part of the Atari Legacy and I would love to see The Midway games arcade versions. Dark Legacy, Gauntlet Legends included. San Francisco Rush 2049.. Heck.. Sinistar!

APB? Escape From The Planet Of The Robot Monsters? Cyberball? Xybots? 720? The System I titles? Not to mention everything else from under that banner??

    DO IT NOW, ATARI!

Warner Brothers is sitting on a gold mine of classic IP that include the Williams Electronics, Bally Midway and Atari Games game libraries. It boggles me why they aren't releasing these IPs for emulation or remaster on the modern consoles.

Horn would the rights stuff work with games that contain other companies’ property? Like LEGO or don bluth or even Warner brothers cartoon characters?

I would just be happy if Atari could acquire the Atari Games games… Being the arcade division they really are the original company. Also, what about Tengen?

Atari can't afford everything, but I could see them buying the IP of the ARCADE games from 1985-1999 made by Atari Games. And possibly Gauntlet Dark Legacy too, as it was made by the recently rebranded Midway Games West….but it was still the California based Atari Games.

George shot the food! Lol, great Bit by Bit! Good job grabbing this one today. While I love the wishing and speculation, I wont hold my breath. I would LOVE to see this happen. I would totally buy a Gauntlet cabinet if it got a release!

Is it gauntlet made by Midway along with Joust and Marble madness?

They need to port Gauntlet Dark Legacy to modern everything. That's the best game in the series. "Pojo your life force is running out"

Yeah probably unlikely to be able to get everything but there is a big opportunity to get a good chunk of the properties back under the Atari banner and hopefully that can happen. 💜

I feel like I just swallowed the Blue and Red Pills from The Matix at the same time (and maybe a new yellow pill too) … what a delightful and totally unexpected rabbit hole we all just went down with you George!!!
    More of this please 🕹️🥳PLP

If not, I'd just be overjoyed with a sequel to Dark Chambers! That said, I've always enjoyed Gauntlet. But man – there would be AT VERY LEAST a few very cool DLC's for Atari 50 in there, among other things!

You said you love Bally/Williams pinball. I'm assuming WB owns the digital pinball rights. The Gamestation Go has Balls of Steel. You see where I'm going with this, right?

Wow, you just dropped this hope bomb on me an ran 😉 I would be so happy to see many of these games given new life, either as new collections released by Atari, or Evercade, or even updated remastered editions. Especially Gauntlet and Spyhunter. Little hope of Tron, due to the Disney licensing costs but you never know (Atari CEO, if your watching, this is what kickstarter can help with).

Your best BitByBit episode yet, George, and sure, Atari buying Warner Games may be speculation, but FUN speculation. It would almost be like the new Atari was getting back a bit of original Atari's soul…what a journey that would be.

From what I heard most WB games are getting used to for coasters, IF Atari goes after the games side they might get it. They 100% should re acquire Atari Games for sure.

  20. @thegamesninja3119

    March 31, 2026 at 7:10 am

And they can acquire the 8bit era IP content from Microsoft. For Gauntlet, they need to include the Adventure cursor and and Rogue @ symbol. And acquire Midway stuff. So Atari has Defender, etc…

  21. @Datan0de

    March 31, 2026 at 7:10 am

I love the idea of Atari reacquiring all of their original IP, and I'm also happy about their acquisition of Intellivision, but what's the benefit to us gamers if they gobble up Midway, Williams, etc? I would with about them losing focus on what makes Atari ATARI, or worse – becoming another EA.

This would be inFreakingCredible! It's a long shot, but it would put Atari back in the mainstream imo. So many products and revenue opportunities with this. Exciting if it happens as unlikely as it is.
