Clarence Thomas is a black nationalist

Garrison Hayes | June 13, 2026

Long before Clarence Thomas sat on the Supreme Court of the United States of America, he was a self-described Black nationalist. Today, he is a champion of far-right ideology and jurisprudence, but I think he still holds onto many of the same ideas. The problem, in my opinion, is where he lands. His solutions are very different from the Black nationalists of the past and present.

I set out to make this video because I wanted to understand Clarence Thomas better, and boy… I learned a lot. Enjoy!

H/t to Corey Robin. His book on Clarence Thomas set me down this path. You can buy a copy here: https://amzn.to/446ITBQ (Affiliate link)

Firstly, the initial imagery of the late and great El Haj Malik El Shabazz behind the mask of Clarence Thomas is egregiously misleading & thoroughly incorrect as he doesn’t carry any of the sentiments that he had.
Clarence Thomas is not a black nationalist- he doesn’t even identify as that. Call him a Capitalist.. Ultra Conservative that happens to be a POC.. never a black nationalist.

This man climbed the ladder of affirmative action then kicked the ladder once he got on top. He resented the fact he got it and said fuck them kids, I got mine.

Clarence Thomas is really Uncle Ruckus 😂😂😂. This man has done way more to harm black peoples than anything else. He’s a traitor and will go down in history as so!

This was a fascinating video… The he thinks individuals can create change but that only works if that one individual inspires others… If not then an individual would just be sniffed out in the rivers of time…

Disagree. We have to be careful of our words. I don’t support any form of nationalism. But, Thomas is not a Black Nationalist. He is a Black man who promotes white nationalism/supremacy…basically, a Black white nationalist. There’s a huge difference. Key parts of Black nationalism is 👉🏽 “reacting AGAINST white racial prejudice/discrimination and critical of the racial “gap.” He does neither. He has aligned himself with organizations that seek to destroy any Black progress, wealth and political power.

And tell me what Malcolm X has to do with this? Brother Malcolm loved Black people, Clarence does not. I'll land here because everything else will be hurtful.

Justice Thomas speaks about personal responsibility and constitutional theory, but there is a massive gap between his philosophy and the real-world consequences his rulings unleash on Black Americans. It is hard to separate the idea of “principle” from decisions that repeatedly weaken voting rights, affirmative action, and protections that helped generations of Black people overcome systemic barriers. I feel less like judicial consistency and more like using abstract theory to justify outcomes that disproportionately harm the very communities that fought to open doors for him.

"…every people has its share of opportunists, traitors, freeloaders, and escapists." -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Clarence Thomas is a hypocrite and Judas. He never was any black nationalist he only pretended to be so.
