It seems to resolve the story better, as well as highlighting the feminist message of the film.

You missed the point. (Too young I guess 😛). Desperately Seeking Susan exists to show disdain for the 1980's suburban yuppie culture and praise the lifestyle of street smart manhattanites. And overall hipness of NYC. Doesn't make it great cinema but that was their goal.

I think you have to be older (although I was only four when this came out) to appreciate this movie. Yeah, it's strange and contrived, but…how can you hate that jacket or the acting?
i'm surprised madonna ever wanted to do films – she does NOT look like the airbrushed facade she does in all her posters and music vids it's really really really false advertising.
All I remember about this is that posable Wonder Woman wall hanging which someone had arranged with its hands in its crotch. Then Madonna says "good going stranger."
