This movie feels like an entire season of a typical soap opera squeezed into a two hour movie. The fact that it sorta makes sense is an accomplishment in itself.

"Desperately Seeking Susan" is probably as good as it gets when it comes to movies featuring Madonna. The movie made it to numerous yearly and decade-end best lists, was a major influence on 1980s fashion, and was added to the National Film Registry in 2023. šŸ¤“

    Fun Fact:

The table at katz's deli where the fake orgasm screen was shot has since been roped off by the deli for didolay only owners because people were constantly trying to break pieces off of itm

5:45 About the Magic Club, the editors and producers said this represented the fact that it was ā€œmagicā€ that Roberta was transforming into Susan. The transformation itself was like a magic trick. THAT’S why Roberta took a job at the Magic Club. It’s called symbolism, Todd. LOL šŸ˜‚

About the ending that seems to go nowhere (i.e., Roberta settling for a NY hovel and a crap job), there is an alternative ending that I think is more interesting, with Roberta and Susan going to Cairo together: https://youtu.be/gR05EA9h0K0?si=M7AU0_f8uWztOjcn I wish they would’ve kept this original ending. It seems to resolve the story better, as well as highlighting the feminist message of the film.

Wow, this is the 1st one of these. Then why aren't they in release order in the Playlist?
4:10 CLUE is not just the best movie based on a toy or board game, but a great movie period, TIM CURRY is a cinematic treasure, and I WILL die on that hill.
7:37 Stealing ancient artifacts, leaving keys to them and a lot of random items in her clothes… Are we sure Madonna's character doesn't have amnesia, or some variant of ADD?

The plot point of Roberta Glass' gig at Magic club was to awe audience that a straight laced housewife a. Gets a job b. At dingy nightclub. It's a class comedy.

You missed the point. (Too young I guess šŸ˜›). Desperately Seeking Susan exists to show disdain for the 1980's suburban yuppie culture and praise the lifestyle of street smart manhattanites. And overall hipness of NYC. Doesn't make it great cinema but that was their goal.

2:45 Masonic, not Illuminist. The Illuminati recruit through the Freemasons, but they regard the Craft, itself, as a waste of time. The Illuminati's goals are less esoteric and more political. Also, Freemasonry borrows a lot of its iconography from Kabbala. Also, A LOT of "law" enforcement agencies are infested with Freemasons. So the fact that Madonna wears a lot of quasi-fash pseudo-uniforms is perfectly fitting despite the fact that Freemasons claim that their precious "Craft" isn't fash. And they might have a point since Freemasonry was outlawed by the Turd Reich since they saw it as having a Jewish influence due to its connection with Kabbala, which the Thule Society saw as a rival school of esoteric philosophy. If Kabbala is Ravenclaw, the Thule Society was Slytherin. The Freemasons probably see themselves as being comparable to all the Hogwarts houses combined.
8:50 How much you wanna bet those cops next to her are Freemasons?

I think you have to be older (although I was only four when this came out) to appreciate this movie. Yeah, it's strange and contrived, but…how can you hate that jacket or the acting?

i'm surprised madonna ever wanted to do films – she does NOT look like the airbrushed facade she does in all her posters and music vids it's really really really false advertising.

All I remember about this is that posable Wonder Woman wall hanging which someone had arranged with its hands in its crotch. Then Madonna says "good going stranger."

The tiny scenes where they’re in that old movie theater his such a specific part of my brain. I wanna sit in there too.
