Chad Smith Tackles Bonham’s First Iconic Led Zeppelin Groove

Drumeo | March 25, 2026

Chad Smith performs “Good Times Bad Times” by Led Zeppelin—one of John Bonham’s most iconic drum performances from their 1969 debut album. This track showcases Bonham’s legendary bass drum doubles, a driving cowbell groove, and the signature swing feel that defined his style.

This is what he has to do to stay relevant, play along to a recording.? Because original drumming is DEAD. People playing to recordings, that’s drumming, now. Total bullshit, no one can come up with anything as cool as what happened 40 years ago😂

Whilst technically correct, he lacks the swing and panache that Bonham added to everything he played. Chad is still an absolute beast on the kit though.

The first time I heard this song I was 14. I was a guitar player. When I heard the drums in this song I wanted to learn the drums just to play this song lol nothing else. The way that bass drum hits is Soo awesome. It still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up when I hear it.

Since Drumeo has highlighted Chad Smith and Stewart Copeland, I have transported myself back to my grade school and high school days and gained a whole new level of appreciation of the true skills.
    Thank you!
