My favorite are those who are content with mediocrity, yet unaware they are mediocre: calibrates their baseline strictly against the crowd around them, "good enough" feels like mastery. Showing them top-tier work often doesn't break the illusion, it just triggers rationalization.

David Dunning also mentioned that part of this is the small wins that make people think more of themselves. They get 2 questions right which are basic and don't realise that there's another 98 questions they haven't attempted which hold more weight but they think 2 questions I'm a genius . I don't need to bother with the rest. Call it a day.

Wow, I've never heard the details of the study. I assumed it was based on actual skills, not a completely subjective dataset. I'm sure the effect is real, just based on my own experiences, but their methodology really sucked.
