Can Republicans Just Refuse To Seat Elected Democrats?

Leeja Miller | February 18, 2026

Go to my sponsor https://aura.com/leeja to try 14 days and let Aura go to work protecting your private information online! | Adelita Grijalva won her special election 3 weeks ago. Since then, over 800,000 people in Southern Arizona have been unrepresented in the House while Mike Johnson drags his feet and uses his job of administering the oath of office to hold her seat hostage to punish Democrats and block the release of the Epstein files. Are there any consequences for Johnson, and could this happen again after the 2026 midterms?

A general strike is a pipe dream in a pipe dream, but it doesn't have to be that way. Contrary to Leeja's claims I think the major reason we can't do a general strike is because we have a very very low percentage of unionized workers in the US. The best way to fix that is to join a union or unionize your workplace. The second one is hard but organizations like Labor Notes and EWOC can guide you.

QUESTION: When you talk the general strike, i would like to know if this general will target the private sector only? Being the that a general strike requires the participation of essential service workers, those essential service be delivered? Last question, would a targeted strike not be a better option where essential boycott and strike against the specific companies that work and fund this administration?

election officials were tossing votes because the signatures did not match and they were tossing many more democratic registered ballots than Republican. Now that is not fraud but it is election rigging.

This one almost feels too obvious and makes me feel so bad for America.

I don't care if the Epstein files ever come out, we already have our judgement. It's just the optics of Republicans speaking the language of their constituents in a way they will understand and dispise.

If they're willing to do this out in the open, it will inevitably lead to other conspiracy assumptions, no?

I make no suggestions, but Just days before that election, ALL eyes were legally and constitutionally bound to Arizona for a national tragedy.

They made it feel illegal to not be Republican for a week.

Now this. I dunno. Everyone hates a $3 puzzle with a piece missing. Enough to send it back or complain to management..

The only way a general strike were to happen is if a critical mass of people'a children were to begin to go hungry. They are thinking of cutting snap. Of course, this may also just cause lawlessness in the despeeate. Theft to feed families is precedented. Who knows what's gonna happen.

I had said that the voters of Grijalva's district should sue Mike Johnson for withholding Congressional representation from them. Then I read that the Arizona AG had filed such a lawsuit. Mike Johnson is breaking the law by not swearing the new Congressperson in as a member of Congress. He should have to pay for that.

Point of order, wouldn't it be the next Speaker that swears in the new House of Representatives, not necessarily Mike Johnson? I remember it being an issue with McCarthy at the beginning of the 118th Congress, where the House couldn't be sworn in until they had elected their new speaker.

    Apparently, they can.
Just as McConnell refused to put Obama's "supreme" court nominee through the process, they don't have to let anyone into Congress that isn't a lapdog of the Diapered Don.

If Republicans refuse to seat duly elected, Democrats to their offices, democracy has truly died in America and the ballot box no longer means anything, thereby rendering any laws solely generated by Republicans invalid/moot.

In which case, Americans should conduct themselves accordingly.

As long as this regime is in control we won't have a fair election. I really don't believe NV voted for him last year I just think they threw out that many democrat votes for simple reasons that could have been fixed.

In Texas our governor refuses to call special elections when a democratic congressman dies in office. Central Houston will have no congressman for virtually this entire congress.
