Caleb Hearon | Improv Saved My Life | Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out Podcast

Mike Birbiglia | November 9, 2025

Comedian Caleb Hearon just turned 30 and he’s already got an hour-long HBO special, hosts a hit podcast (So True with Caleb Hearon), and was named one of the top social media influencers of 2025 by Rolling Stone. But it hasn’t been an easy road. Caleb talks with Mike about his battles with suicidal ideation, how improv comedy saved his life, and how he drew on the passing of his estranged father for his comedy special. Plus, Caleb and Mike discuss the value seeing stand-up live vs. on TV, and come up with a plan to go off the grid and live in a cabin in the mountains together.

I now want a video of Caleb and your daughter doing your hair! (She can direct from off camera if she's shy/you wanna protect her from the spotlight)

I bet Caleb's a fun uncle to hang out with

THE RAT THING HAPPENED TO ME TOOOOOOO. My dog was playing with something in my basement. I grab it out of its mouth IT IS A DEAD MUMMIFIED ANCIENT RELIC OF A RAT AND MY HEART LEFT MY BODY. It was the most horrifying experience of my life.

I’m on like a 10:1 ratio – interviews of Caleb: his comedy, bc I am just beyond impressed at his emotional and philosophical maturity. Wise and compassionate beyond his years. He frequently leaves me inspired to think about my community more

Huge fan of Caleb’s comedy, but I’m also so impressed by how philosophical and insightful he is. Like his idea of death being like a quiet drive home after hanging out with people you love. I just enjoy his brain.

I'm halfway through, and this is amazing.

One weird thing, it's dark out here and the daylight peeking around the window shade in the video is making me think the sun is rising, here. I know it's not, but apparently my mind is very malleable.

One of the greatest most helpful things I've EVER heard in my life about anxiety, ocd or depression was on a podcast I cant remember I think it was last meals and Caleb said to fight his depression and not get stuck in it or go deeper into the hole he does 2 and 1. Meaning he can wallow in bed and isolate and not speak to friends or shower for 2 days and on the 3rd day he MAKES himself do all of the things and get out in sunshine then he repeats the 2 days until the feeling is over and hes out of it and fine. I love that because I've seen someone in depression and stuck and a week of bed rot can turn into months. So that was so cool to hear

this is so crazy, but last night i had a dream that i bumped in to Caleb. i complemented his work and he was so nice and appreciative. he might have actually astrial projected in my dream cause i feel like that’s exactly how his fan interactions go.

I spent forever trying to find the random flash frame @14:06, hoping upon hope that it was an old picture of Birbigs with a gay haircut…It was just a random flash frame of him smiling during this portion of the interview. What a wasted opportunity that was.
