BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER: Natasha Lyonne & RuPaul camp it up
But I’m a Cheerleader was meant to be the gay version of Clueless, with a twist of John Waters camp, a look inspired by Barbie meets Tim Burton, and an unlikely role for RuPaul. It’s a film that divided critics and audiences alike — and went on to become an international camp classic. But what might seem like an outrageous neon fantasy is based on a long history snake oil, scams, and scandals … and a real-life menace that seemed like it was about to die out, but now twenty five years later is ready to rise from the grave.

I was a kid when this came out, and I was lucky enough to be able to watch it… it was one of my fav Queer movies, and having a Queer Asian male character was affirming.

I actually loved this movie. A couple decades later and I appreciate the ultra soft insight of "conversion therapy" that this movie brought up.

I'll bet the banning of gay conversion programs will be challenged on 'religious freedom' grounds. That's my 2c.

On March 31, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-1 against a Colorado law that banned "conversion therapy" for minors, siding with a Christian counselor who argued the restriction violated First Amendment free speech rights

I've never understood the appeal of this movie. It's a camp message movie and it tried too hard on all counts.

Hey Matt, what's that clip at 38:15 ? Is that an ex-gay group? Or is that an anti ex gay group? Approximately what year is it? Thanks.

I grew up with these beliefs. I thought my random crushes on females was just appreciation/admiration, norlt attraction. But it got stronger over time. When my son came out as trans (AFAB), I became an ally. About 6 years ago (at age 52), I officially accepted that I was bisexual and came out of the closet. I didn't feel that my Christianity and my bisexuality were at odds. In 2023 I met my now wife on eharmony. We married last year in January. In February (after having been watching online preachers for months) she announced that she believed that lesbianism was a sin against God. We are trying to resolve this problem.

I know this is kind of a long shot, and I realize the video is kind of old, but does anyone know where a higher quality version of the short "Sleeping Beauties" is online? I have looked for a good while, and all I could find was the short uploaded on Youtube 16 years ago in 240p. If anyone could help I'd greatly appreciate it.
