The first 3 Dead albums I rarely listen to. It did not start happening for me until Workingman’s Dead. There are about 4 Dead albums (Workingman’s, Beauty, Wake, and Mars) I listen to, but the majority of what I listen to is full live shows. I’m not a fan of hand picked songs for a live album. I want the whole show, mistakes and all.

After Roger left Tramp I stopped buying their albums. Even Famous Last Words was just okay, and their best stuff was now behind them. Crime, Crisis, Quietest, and America are the only ones you need. If you can find the live show from Paris with the cd / dvd from the Breakfast Tour, get that. It’s from the same place, but a different night than the Paris album. And it’s a full show. It’s in 5.1 SS, I believe too.

I have none…..I have first pressing "Crime of the Century" & "Breakfast in America" (that has a mysterious skip in it)🤣 I always loved "Brother" because of "Cannonball"….so, that may be my first of these Remastered copies…..Great selections ….😎✌️

Did I hear you throw that overused terminology "PROG" towards the band Supertramp? I would like to remark, Supertramp are pop-rock easy-listening yacht-rock sound at best. True, they are marvelous and I have 6 albums of theirs in my humble collection of over 800 rock albums. But this last offering was where the band lost much of their rock sound and leant way too much towards safe middle-aged mellow drama noodling…no thanks.

    Hey there,
I really appreciate your work and enjoy your turn of phrase. I'm on the other side of the world living in Bondi Beach, Australia. I've been lucky to have grown up in the 'goldilocks zone', in terms of popular music, in contact and close proximity to many musicians over the years.
I just wanted to say hello and thanks for nursing the Muses in their time of need.

Deep intellectual critiques and deep dives into rock history are nice, but sometimes you just want to see a fan geek out and go 'Look at this cool stuff!'.

Nice haul, fun video and I would definitely go for the Supertramp and the Dead albums.

When i originally subscribed to your channel, you used to do classic album reviews and CD'S were your thing. You seem to be flogging new vinyl albums and CD'S through your channel now rather than proper reviews. I assume these are freebies from the gravy train. A number of so called VC channels have gone down this route, not calling out that they have free copies which has to compromise the review in question imo as channels are acting as agents for the labels now. Its a pity really , commercialism has taken over.

The Dead at that point (summer '66) were still largely influenced by the bluegrass/folk origins of Garcia and the blues courtesy of Ron (Pigpen) McKernan; though they (with the exception of Pigpen, who didn't like psychedelics) were using a lot of acid and other substances at the time, they didn't really begin translating that into psychedelic music until a bit later. Owsley Stanley (whose nickname was Bear due apparently to having a lot of body hair) was not only their producer for most of this time, but their sound tech and, of course, their primary supplier of mind altering substances, being an expert chemist. As they moved into more and more experimentation (musically and chemically), extended jams, etc., and began using more distortion and other electronic enhancements in their music, Pigpen, a straight-ahead blues shouter with a limited set of keyboard playing skills, was more and more sidelined.

I was hoping that you might talk about Supertramp's BROTHER WHERE YOU BOUND release from last week. I had never bought this album in any format…until last Friday! Yep, I bought this new half-speed re-mastering on vinyl. There are some minor 80s tech influences in there which I can live without but it is a far better record than I had anticipated. Time will tell how well it sits with me. So far, so good. I got around to occasionally listening to the title track a year or so ago and I was familiar with "Cannonball" from its 1985 release days. So far, this pressing and the quality of the songs is registering mostly positively with me. The title track (with Mr. Gilmour) is worth the price of the purchase. A pleasant surprise, overall. Much preferred over …FAMOUS LAST WORDS… which I did not buy when it recently came out as a part of the half-speed re-mastering series. I will not likely be going beyond BROTHER WHERE YOU BOUND in my Supertramp catalogue. Audio quality: excellent! I never owned the original pressing, so I cannot make a comparison. The other recent half-speed re-mastered Supertramp releases I can compare to the original vinyl and am most impressed with the audio quality of these new ones!

I never got Supertramp. I saw them at the Dagenham Roundhouse, 1st August 1970, supporting Derek and The Dominos. I know their style changed but the never rocked my boat.
The Dead are a different matter – always best live. 1966 is very early, in fact earlier than their first album. It looks a lovely package but did they really get going before 1969…?
I may well invest. Thanks for the video.
