Blue Collar vs. White Collar Metalheads: What’s the Difference?

Heavy Metal Philosophy | September 25, 2026

In episode 289 of Heavy Metal Philosophy, Jon Barbas breaks down the differences and similarities between blue-collar and white-collar metalheads. Metal fans have a lot in common, but different work environments create different cultures. Let’s have some good-natured fun with the comparisons, let me know what you think!

I've worked both, worked in a foundry, than landscaping for years until I finished school and got a climate controlled job. Biggest difference I noticed, blue collar has no worries about openly talking about taboo topics of metal, mentioning a song called Meat Hook Sodomy is a non-event. HR frowns upon telling co-workers you're going to see Dying Fetus this weekend. People will stand up and look at you like you're about to summon Satan into the office for just mentioning a band. In the office metal heads are more like a secret club, can't risk offending the iced coffee, reality TV coworkers. Blue collar, the boss overhears you and just says 'you knuckleheads ain't right, you know that?'

Scaffolding isn’t built in stories (also, that was not two stories up, a story is about 12 feet). It’s built in bucks. One buck of scaffolding is normally 5 or 6 feet. You were climbing 2 bucks of scaffolding, or 10/12 feet.

Hey, what about blue-collar metalheads that become white-collar metalheads? I'm one of them!
I worked for a lot of years at a cardboard box factory, in sweatshop conditions and with Spanish shift, that's 12 hours a day, stopping 2 hours for lunch (thus wasting 14 hours of your life) and 60-hour weeks, when not more. My job was on a calander machine, a large steel cylinder that gets to 300°C to melt plastic and plastify large pieces of cardboard. I had to lift rolls of plastic weighing 61 kg by hand to the machine. I got so freakin' buff that the chicks of the shoe factory next door cat-called me while when I was outside in shorts and tank top. My significant other got mightily pissed . . . I managed to finish my studies (BSC in German language, cheating, because I am a native speaker, so that half of the work I had already cut out) . . .

I recall blasting Metallica, Anthrax and DRI in the weekends while preparing Bloody Marys and getting high on . . . certain "performance improving" substances.

I immigrated the Netherlands and thanks to my addiction to computers and that I speak German, Spanish and English with a job in IT and have been working in the field for two decades. I'm as blue-collar as it gets, I have a high-paying job in a state-owned company that provides IT infrastructure to the entire Dutch educational system. I actually work with the national supercomputer surrounded by scientist and top-notch engineers. Some of them metalheads too. For instance, the head of the European LOFAR radiostronomy array (https://www.astron.nl/telescopes/lofar/) who were involved in the famous first picture of a black hole. The dude, Raymong Oonk, is a Slayer fan who comes to work sporting Slayer T-shirts. Then there is one of the two leaders of the supercomputing team who is a black metal fan and a few more.

I am also an ultrarunner, don't usually drink (except when I indulge in some craft beer after the training and race season is over).

I'm a white-collar metalhead! I am basically "From Goth2Boss" in real life. I once played the metal drums in a costume in a black metal band in Chicago clubs while working some corporate lawyer tech position downtown. I once stood in the front row of a Nile concert at Reggie's club while wearing a suit I had to just coming from my day job 🙂

As a person from the southwest screamo scene of the 2000s, is so infuriating that metalheads of all people seriously still don’t know or understand that it’s a literal genre of hardcore punk that goes back decades.

I work at a factory where we got to wear our hoodies because it is 30: degrees…I wear my Cannibal Corpse,Amon Amarth, and Slayer hoodies… Underneath,,I wear my Dark Funeral, Cannibal Corpse, and Slayer shirts… Everybody knows what kind of music I like and I do get compliments like Hey I like your shirt or your hoodie…Think I am the only one in the factory that wears heavy metal clothing….I would never hide what I like or feel embarrassed of what I listen too….As a Metal Head,,I am showing everybody what I like…..if there was a dress code,,I am finding another Job…Glad I do a good job at my work place and listening to Metal is my full time life Job

I worked at a gas station for five years and am now trying to get my master in history, so I get being both white and blue collar. What I noticed is that blue collar people listen to more extreme types like death metal, deathcore and black metal. On the other hand, white collar metalheads seem to be more into melodic types like melodeath and symphonic metal. Of course there's some overlap, as I'm sometimes in a class with someone wearing black and death metal shirts. My favorite types are dissodeath power metal, so I guess I sum this up pretty well myself.

I never heard of the term 'corporate metal', but from the way you described it, you'll find it both in the office and in the steel factory.

What a great topic man, good job. I have been working machines for over a decade never thought of the higher ups in the qc for cncs as white collar, but it fits. Also in relevance to this topic i was locked up for months waiting to be delivered to another state in shackles (long story) and was wearing a cradle of filth shirt. After months of depreaaion and not knowing what'a gonna happen, a cop said he liked my shirt. I thanked him…but he assumed it was sarcastic. He said "No, really man" broke out his phone and played some cradle. It actually made me feel less alone, that little gesture really made my day. So it is in parallel to this topic, metalheads of all walks help all the rrat of us. A tribe.worth having, even when you aren't about tribalism. Great video!

Appreciate this take. I’m a public school teacher so I guess that is white collar. One of my co workers found out I listen to metal and asked how the f’ can I listen to that stuff 😅. I was like I love it and helps with ADHD and anxiety

Oh man I like heavy stuff disturbed 5 finger death punch. As someone who writes code for a living for huge corporations this is so true. I always play along they made the effort so I'll be nice. But yeah so true.
