Dude, yes it is. Space = $$$. Just 5 years ago there were places you could buy land for $500/acre. Not improved (farmable) land, but you could get it. There were remote places you could get land $1k/acre.
Now, the side of a cliff is $10k/acre. Good, improved, farmable land is $30-100k an acre.
Let's say you buy yourself a nice 50 acre farm for $1m – now you have a $1k+ a month rent payment to the government called property tax. This is all intentional.
If you want to fix this you have to have a method of farming that makes it more profitable than taking corporate contracts.
You could make heavy inroads if you could utilize abandoned chicken houses — because regulations change constantly there are tons of chicken houses all over the midwest that can't be used to raise chickens. Figure out how to utilize those and you'd be making some big inroads – they litter the midwest. Most have been converted into hay storage for chicken farms turned cattle farms.
"How many farmers do you guys think we have in America right now"
So, a lot of people claim farm status for tax purposes. The number is radically smaller than statistics say.
I come from a family of farmers. They all still own the land, at least for the moment, but almost none of it is farmed for commercial purposes anymore. Because the government has made it impossible, on purpose, to farm anymore. So you can have a farm that you raise animals for your family on and that's basically what these farms are now. That's 8 families that are counted as farmers and only 1 of them commercially farms still and 0, absolutely none of the children of any of the families have continued or intend to continue farming. All of that land will change hands at some point and surely end up sold and turned into subdivisions.
So the real question is what % of America farms commercially and not under contract from a corporation and I'll bet it's les than 0.001%.
Here's the thing — if you want to raise chickens outside a coop — at any kind of scale, you're going to deal with mass losses. Basically every raptor for miles and miles will eventually see your farm as a refrigerator. Foxes, wolves, coyotes, bears, bobcats, mountain lions, etc – depending on region, they'll all eat your chickens.
Mind you, this happens with chicken houses, too. They'll dig in, tear open walls, etc.
So what you have to do is have small coops that you can move so they can 'graze'. This is fine, but doing it at scale is… there's not really a way to do it yet. So if you want $30/lb chicken, that's probably what it would cost and that's assuming you could get enough farmers to do it — there's not many farmers left, the corporations and foreign countries own all the land now and what land is owned by generational farmers is so absurdly regulated by government that most generational farms have closed because, frankly, that's what the government wants and has accomplished through taxation and regulation (just another type of tax).
Put it simply, people in the US have long voiced their true feelings by voting with their wallet – they've said loud and clear that farmers, real farmers not corporate farmers, they don't want to pay them a wage you can live on.
You can't say you want chickens raised in a way that requires constant physical attention, will still result in a lot of lost animals to predators which then includes an added cost of predator control, but then want to pay the same or less as you do for beef. Because I can raise beef almost completely hands off the animal, maintain the land, feed, health, etc – but that's a huge difference from having to monitor and move chicken coops around all day.
Right now, the way things are — poor people can eat a chicken a day. Easily, the government will basically give them one (which I personally think is absurd – but that's because the government takes that money from me, with the threat of force, to give to others — who often choose to leach instead of use the help to lift themselves up). You change from this type of chicken farming and those people will only eat chicken on very special occasions.
I don't have chicken farms, but I have family who has in the past. The farms are not the horrors that people make them out to be. Commercial cattle farms, yes. I think those should be illegal. Commercial hog farms, same thing. Chickens, though, these animals are not intelligent and they're just fine being in the coop. I'm not saying it's perfect — but the animals themselves are fine.
Tell ya, about 25 years ago I live out in North-central Arkansas and there was a chicken farmer I drove by on the way to work. He had 2 houses, so a small operation. He started trying to do grazing, so he'd let the birds out of the house into an ~20 acre pen and then put them back in at night. He did that for about 3 months before he stopped because predators had killed about half his birds. Not kidding, when I would drive by I'd have to stop for the eagles that were STANDING IN THE ROAD, watching his farm – waiting for him to let the birds out in the morning. There were not a couple, there were dozens of eagles. That was one of the craziest things I've seen in my life — and they kept coming, every day, for months after he stopped letting the birds out. It got to the point there were probably 50 eagles scattered around this valley as I'd come off the ridge I'd see them standing out in fields, on the road, etc — they looked like penguins, it was so crazy.
Anyway, I digress. The problem is that farming chickens the way you people, myself include in you people there, want — it's so involved that to do it at scale, with current methods, would make chickens significantly more expensive than beef. AND, this is important, the government is going to FIGHT YOU when you try.
So, to achieve this – you've got to create a method of farming chckens that is humane and requires almost no attention from a farmer. Once a day, for an hour – per about 500 birds, that's what you need. Because I can raise cattle at 100 head per hour of day, easily, and if they're all grazing then per lb of animal the acerage requirements are about the same but I have significantly less concern over predators for cattle. Not saying it doesn't happen, it does… a lot, but nothing like what happens with chickens. I'm telling you, predators LOVE them some chicken.
Because of your videos I found a local farm that sells pasture raised chickens only a few miles from my house. I had no idea they were there. Its wild to see the size difference between a normal healthy amd happy chicken and those massive abominations they sell at the grocery store. I appreciate your work and the info your sharing. I have chickens and ducks for eggs. We were tossing around getting chickens for just meat but after researching Cornish Cross breeds, I refused. It would be better to have chickens that are good for meat but also can lay eggs. They won’t eat themselves to death like the CC’s. Also you don’t have to keep buying them every year, CC’s generally don’t even live long enough to lay eggs. Good breeds will produce eggs that can be eaten or hatched for the endless cycle of eggs and meat.

Most of the vendors were crafts people or sold spice mixes and things like that. We stopped going because getting double the dollar value? Great… but when there’s very little available, it means we often spent very little or nothing at all. I was recommended to sign up for a cooperative farm program, one of those that you get a monthly box pick up at the farm that’s your share of the product that week, which is great… but not available on SNAP. It’s a problem that needs to be addressed, for sure

When you have people loading up grocery carts full of soda and junk food and it's all snap subsidized, you have a problem. Americans are not starving. We've raised chickens many years, and I just don't see there being a vibrant restaurant industry without efficient consistently available low cost meat. If all chicken had to be pastured & organic fed, there fast food & other restaurants would have to charge 4 times as much for chicken. Especially if they could only use healthy oils & organic breading and only healthy organic ingredients in any of the food. I don't think America should have allowed toxic farming & grocery store, restaurant ingredients in the first place, but we did. So now what? Quality food used to be the norm and people spent 1/6th of their income on food, but now there's so many more things for income to go to…. more taxes, insurance, electronics, vehicles, sports & college & makeup & more. To make food healthy again will require less spending in other areas of life. So in going after CAFOs, we're also going after other industries & jobs & retirement savings opportunities. It's all connected. The KETO & low carb & carnivore diets…. healthier especially for people already sick with diabetes & autoimmune & overweight & hormone issues, but as a goat dairy hobby farmer, I see how rare natural fats are in farming and in the wild too. The whole world can't access a healthy KETO diet even if they wanted to, even if it was promoted by all governments & entertainment influencers and schools. Even DR JASON FUNG of all people just did a video on how to reduce the damaging glycemic/insulin spiking effect of the low fat carbohydrates foods. I think CAFOs can be made healthier, but that will double the cost of the food. It would be nice if 100 million people were inspired to live simpler and grow enough organic food to supply the restaurants & markets, but how do you inspire enough children to want to grow up to do outdoor work and small scale butcher work like World famous farmer Joel Salatin to feed their neighbors? Your comments on SNAP are wrong because the government should not be in the business of feeding people. There are plenty of charities that help feed people. Stealing people's labor in the form of taxation is evil.

The government makes it so expensive and so hard to be able to sell raw meat at a farmers market. Just to be able to sell eggs, I had to jump through so many hoops and pay over $400. Even selling straight from your own farm is very hard and expensive thanks to government putting their hands in everything. Ask around at your local farmers market if there is someone who does sell from their farm… I'm sure someone will show you the right direction to follow. Us farmers find a way to get our chickens where they need to be.

It would be nice if 100 million people were inspired to live simpler and grow enough organic food to supply the restaurants & markets, but how do you inspire enough children to want to grow up to do outdoor work and small scale butcher work like World famous farmer Joel Salatin to feed their neighbors? I'm just looking forward to Jesus coming back and making all things new. That will be the end of chemicals & CAFOs & "radical" Islam.

Your comments on SNAP are wrong because the government should not be in the business of feeding people. There are plenty of charities that help feed people. Stealing people's labor in the form of taxation is evil.

I'm all for whole foods, but the most relevant population of SNAP benefits receivers are the disabled and elderly who aren't able to prep meals from scratch.

It's really sad considering the fact that meat satiates and sustains the body so much better (meaning oz per oz meat rids hunger better), and yet food pantries are primarily stocked with carbs.🐔

The government makes it so expensive and so hard to be able to sell raw meat at a farmers market. Just to be able to sell eggs, I had to jump through so many hoops and pay over $400. Even selling straight from your own farm is very hard and expensive thanks to government putting their hands in everything. Ask around at your local farmers market if there is someone who does sell from their farm… I'm sure someone will show you the right direction to follow. Us farmers find a way to get our chickens where they need to be.

The USDA described the cancellation of LFPA program, in order to return to long-term, fiscally responsible initiatives, noting that the programs were created via executive authority (autopen) not Congress, under the previous administration (Biden) and were never permanent appropriations. They were never permanent appropriations. The program was temporary.
