I see overriding parts of myself to appease others a sort of sacrificial binding of self. Like double crossing and carrying the weight like a pack mule if the new gets criticized and assigned shame. It feels like shit and considering I've never fit in anywhere and no matter what you do, haters hate anyway. Delegate hate. It's not an option for me to betray myself. When everyone else has shown you where you stand according to them, at least ill like myself.

I was enjoying your recent upload, and thinking about how you made videos and disappeared for years and came back to still have your audience awaiting you and I wondered about the span of time things were quiet. So i went looking and found older videos i hadnt seen before and I love them. Thank yoy ❤

12 years after this video, I still hate the advice "Be yourself". Anything that tells you to "be" is bunkum. Like, how do you "be" "in love"? Love is not a state, it is an action, an action that is at once involuntary but at the same time needs to you to maintain, to cultivate, to grow, to nurture, to build up when it gets knocked down.

And that is what I learned I/you/we need to do. Don't "Be yourself". "Do yourself" (get your brain out of the gutter). I mean your self is an action, your life is an action, not a state, not something that is permanent and unchanging. You need to discover yourself, grow, nurture, maintain, all that junk, and you can only do that by taking action, and you are the only person who can do it. Stop thinking about how to be and just go out and do.

And do something, anything. Thinking is the death of action, and the death of action is the death of self. Your self will never come find you, you need to go out and find it, wrangle it to the ground while screaming "I GOT YOU YOU SLIPPERY LITTLE BASTARD". And you'll never know when or how you'll find it, but you can only find it by doing.

When asked how to improve upon the advice, "be yourself", why do I think of the Beatle's song, "Imagine", no wait, wrong song, I meant "Let it Be", only with the alternate lyrics, "Let it pee, let it pee! Let it peee-eee-eee-eeee! Something words of wisdon, let it pee-ee-ee-yeah."

God, I just discovered the existence of this show a year ago and love everything about it.
I wish I was aware of it when it was still running. Watching it now, a decade later, is a strange feeling, like the one you get when you see traveling photos of your friend's parents on their fridge. Lives and undeniably awesome events that you're so distant from, but you still wish deep down that you were there with them.

Frank, you most likely don't read these anymore but you're an inspiration.

The secret of enlightenment and self-realization is to FIND yourself, to KNOW yourself. It takes no effort to BE yourself. But if we still think we are our thoughts, our personality, our body, our story (all of which change constantly), then we can never just be. Kids don't know shit about fuck. It's usually only after we survive all the misery of growing up that we finally come home. But once we are no longer confused about WHAT we are, we can choose to be that consciously. In fact, we can BE whoever we want to be; wild, goofy, free, and without pretense, even when it looks absurd or pretentious to others! "…To be yourself is ALL that you can do!" – Audioslave

True Facts is a wonderful, funny, and informative series.. but I would LOVE to see videos like these come back. They are emotional and make you rethink even the most basic of things. This man is truly a miracle of a human.

I always had a really hard time trying to be anything but a "character" I constructed for other people, even when I was alone I stayed "in character", because I didn't know how to deal with any of that "self" business, so I just pretended it wasn't there. Everytime I tried I just felt… out of place. I felt like I was just, (I don't know how to say this)… "wrong".

And then I finally came to realise what my dumb, dense brain already knew but decided not to know: I was a girl all along! No wonder even the "good" social interactions felt "off", and I forced a character upon myself even when I was alone.

Ever since I realised that, life became a lot harder, but simultaneously easier to bear.

This was so relatable ZeFrank. However, life led me to understand it and apply it, despite that during the teen years was so hard to do. Now I found myself giving that advice along with how to be yourself 🙂

Self awareness is a trip! Thank you for sharing the extension of yourself that is Zefrank1 of the Facts videos. Don't be in character outside of your kingdom. Over -19 posture kills. I'm sure just know you are the him will find you well received everywhere. Just saying. Fame is brutal.

I've always thought of this as one of those childrens fit the shape through the appropriate hole toys. If you decide to be yourself you're going to get slammed into holes you don't quite fit through repeatedly, until hopefully the drooling flesh potato manages through pure chance to find where you belong, and you get in the box, whole. There are other holes of course, some you'll lose less of yourself going through, some more. In short, being yourself will give you a better idea of where you'll potentially fit, which may be no where at all.

Being myself in high school was putting in two different color contacts, and the switch the colors on my eyes one in a while. Kids definitely noticed. Freaked them out.. I enjoyed that.

Damn. Watching your own funeral is comforting. Yeah, I get those thoughts recuringly. It's nice to know it will end, but then there's sadness because you don't know how you want it to end.

My mom tells me the reason I can't make friends is because I have long hair, I'm skinny, my face looks weird. Not so much be yourself but be like other people. I think I would like to just be myself, that's scary too though.

We spend a relatively short time in childhood and the rest of our lives trying to recover. I am 53 and trying to work toward being more myself, or more authentic each day.

I believe that “be yourself” really means to love yourself and never let anyone shame you for your differences, your strengths, talents, failures, etc. I love Ze acknowledged the different facets of ourselves, because if you are interesting at all, you are multifaceted, you have the professional you, the funny you, the kind you, the jerk you, the scared you, the strong you, and so many more. I think that you are finally yourself when you truly don’t care or take on untruths or opinions of other people. Personally, I’ve always been fondest of those who dare to march to the beat of a different drummer. And if you don’t agree, I don’t care. 😁

    b yourself when u r by yourself
b careful when u r with other selves

… unless there ficks(that's a fuck dick), just slowly walk away

If they need support, evaluate if u can help

    if u can, do
    if u can't, don't … & forget about it!(Jersey accent)

Ok I've been watching since forever. A whole butt ton has changed. When I started I was in love for the first time, then my partner had a psychotic break and started having hallucinations, and then I was depressed bc I had to move to a new city, then I lost a dear friend to anorexia. THEN I had a botched surgery resulting in my surgeon puncturing the side of uterus and I bled out half the blood I had.

Every step has been made easier when I checked out your videos. The confusion and anger was totally understandable but these videos helped me feel not so alone and gave me tools I still use.

Now with a pandemic I find myself back here relearning it's okay to not be okay but be as okay as you can be in the midst of a lot of not ok stuff to ensure you stay ok ok not stuff down the not okay feelings to pretend okay ok?

I love True Facts but what I really love is Ze Frank. Thank you so much. You've really helped me ❤

Thank you! Be yourself is anxiety provoking in ordinary circumstances, but they like to couple it with victim blaming among the most boundary-less of us. Be yourself, but nobody likes you. Be yourself, but don’t be a people pleaser.

Fuck all y’all, I’m going back to bed.

February 1977, on a high school ski club outing. Decided to dress up a bit and try and look cool, got laughed at. Decided that night to be myself regardless of the reactions and to stop trying to be someone else to fit in. Changed my life. Not always easy, but so far life has been pretty good
