ATARI 2600 Tapper Is RARE, But Is It Any Good?
Shop G’AIM’E: https://genxgrownup.com/gaime
Arcade games are on Jon’s mind as he prepares to head to the Southern-Fried Gaming Expo, so this week on Friday Plays he is checking out Sega’s uncommon 1984 conversion of Tapper for the Atari 2600.
This late-release port is now rare, expensive, and unfamiliar to many Atari fans—but how much of Bally Midway’s frantic arcade classic survived the trip to the 2600? Jon serves drinks, catches returning glasses, tackles the devious bonus round, and finds out whether this watered-down conversion still has plenty of flavor.

I like how the Tapper guy made a cameo in Wreck It Ralph as a bartender.
Also, why are you not moving up and down in the gameplay footage until 6:40 into the video when you start mentioning it?

Apparently I'm not the only one who thought it looked like the game was flipping the player off with that blue hand on top 😂

I've always loved this version of Tapper. Amazingly accurate considering the limitations. I believe I picked it up for a buck or two early in my retro collecting journey. At the time if a store, usually a thrift store, even had any Atari items they were pretty much just tossed in the dollar bin witout much thought as there wasn't much of a market for retro games at the time.

If it wasn't for Wreck It Ralph, I would never even know this game existed.

That looks like a great rendition of the game, especially considering the limitations of the 2600. Great video Jon!

Loved it in the arcade and on the C-64. I'll be checking out the 2600 version this weekend. Thanks again for highlighting a game I would've otherwise overlooked!

One game that I never see anyone posting about is Zork. I played the heck outta that as a kid, we had it on the school computer in our classroom. It was on a cassette, and used a attached cassette drive to a TRS-80 computer to play it. It is a text based game, so it won't get much fanfare from many players on YouTube, but I loved that game. I played some of the sequels, but nothing captured the imagination like the first time being worried about getting eaten by a grue 🙂

I first discovered this game a few years ago in a retro arcade. It's a lot of fun and I'm sure I would have loved to have it on my Atari 2600, even though I really like the tap control on the arcade version. It would have been good if the control worked by holding the button and then pulling the joystick down to simulate the tap.

OK, I didn't not know this was rare, but it does explain why the copy I say in a used video game store was asking for close to $80 for the copy they had.

Spent sometime trying to track this game down to play on my 7800+, but couldn’t find a copy at a reasonable price. Was able to get the Midway Classics collection for my PS2 and “Root Beer Tapper” was able to scratch that itch.

I've got Tapper on my "to buy" list for Atari 2600. It's got an Atari Age rarity score of 6+ out of 10, and it goes for under $100 on eBay listing. It's not the rarest or most expensive on my list, but still gonna have to wait a while to buy it 😞

Those poor Atarians had to bartend to patrons who never tipped. The box artwork even teased them with piles of money. P.S. Would’ve been nice to see the bartender opening a shaken can at the end.

I had this game for Atari. I loved the arcade version so much and couldn't believe I got to play it at home – great review!

I liked it at the arcade and on PlayStation but never played the 2600 version. So many interesting games came out in 1982-3 (and a couple in 1984), that it wasn't possible to buy them all at the time (at full price).

Tapper is an interesting game. the original tapper arcade game got into alot of trouble due to the budwiser logo in the game. they had to retool it a bit and renamed it root beer tapper.

I just picked this one up a few weeks ago. I was traveling for the July 4th holiday, and needed to kill some time, so I found a nearby video game store. I hit the jackpot there – picked up Tapper, Spy Hunter, Up N Down, Shuttle Orbiter, and Q*bert's Qubes. Blew through my entire vacation budget in one stop! 🤣 Glad you mentioned the 2 drink limit. That's been causing me problems since I started playing it. Couldn't get to the 2nd bonus. I'll have to give this another play tonight!
@SkiBumMSP
August 2, 2026 at 8:32 am
Did not realize there was an Atari port of Tapper! That looks way better than I would've other wised guessed. Pretty neat it has all four bar types as well as the bonus round in there (seems Atari 2600 ports of arcade games leave out complete levels, i.e, only the two level types in Donkey Kong, missing the third dungeon in Venture, etc). Even has the background music. Of course, I would not expect it to have graphics like the arcade version. Still bummer it is missing customers leaving tips, though. As for can punk rockers drink? I sponsor a heavy metal festival, and believe me, they can drink!

Definitely one of my favorite games. I had it back years ago, I played the arcade version 40 years ago. Now of course you have to do the ColecoVision version 😅
