Are The Kinks a MOD Band?

Poetic Wax | October 4, 2025

Are The Kinks a MOD band? When you look at The Kinks’ early work from the mid 1960s, they seem to fit the part. Sharp suits, R&B influences. But it’s not as simple as that. Today, we break it down, defining what a MOD band is, and sharing the arguments for and against the claim. Chime in with your thoughts on the topic in the comments. (And, as always, be respectful!)

I think they were more influential on than influenced by the Mods. After You Really Got Me all the Mod bands retooled what had been pretty a straightforward R&B sound to incorporate those choppy, dirty chords — take Can’t Explain for example. Throwing it forward to the Mod revival at the end of the 70s/early 80s, The Jam were deeply indebted to the Kinks.

My dad was a Mod, in the 60’s, in a band that would be termed Mod later in time (he was the organist, a la Procol Harum style). His favourite band was The Kinks until the day he was no longer on this Earth sadly. So in my eyes, they were the epitome of the Mod ethic, sound and style, really as forerunners of the ‘true’ Mod style of the Who, Small Faces, etc.
One of the only periods of music I’d have loved to been part of at the time (this and the 77 Punk scene). Unfortunately, I got the early 2Ks pop nonsense 🤦‍♂️ but still got to experience a bit of Punk and Ska …6th generation? Whatever came along with the ‘Mosher’ skate scene I was part of in my teens.
