Are seals evolving into whales?

Lindsay Nikole | September 25, 2025

Are seals just halfway through their journey of becoming something more like a whale? Today, we’ll be exploring their evolutionary journey. I’ll introduce you to their ancestors, strange specimens in the seal lineage, and answer the question: Is WHALE their final form?

A huge thanks to Gian and Josh for the fantastic editing!

Look, I’ve only watched 30 seconds so far, so take this in good faith and very lightly: THAT TITLE — my god, I’ve read that thing and felt so many levels of confusion and… fear? Or am I the only one the thesis seems dystopian and a bit unsettling?

Don’t get me wrong — I am prepared and in for the ride

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk

I heard from a mastozoology professor that pinnipeda is actually a polyphyletic group, that seals are a clade more closely related to mustelids and that fur seals, sea lions and walruses are more closely related to bears.

Disappointed you didn't cover how the three groups of pinnipeds swim. Spoiler: they swim differently from each other and completely different from cetaceans.
