There are some animal features that just put the heebie-jeebies in us. Even though some of those animals are totally harmless. Did nature evolve “scary” features for a reason? Or is it just the work of the devil? Let’s take a look and see.

I was on a diving holiday in Borneo about 20 years ago. Before every dive, the local guide carefully checked his boots. I asked him why. He told me about the local aggressive centipede that likes living in dive boots and what it feels like to get bitten by one. I laughed. Then made sure I carefully checked my dive boots before every dive for the local aggressive centipede that like living in dive boots. 😂

Animals didn't evolve to look scary. We evolved to have an aversion to the sight of animals with predatory or dangerous features, because such aversion gave us a survival advantage.

Why is it we think that fluffy furry animals are cute and then we look at a hairless cat or the tale of a rat and we think it’s gross? Look at humans they’ve got like basically no hair at all except on their head and their genitals. So humans must be the ugliest animals pretty much ever.(and I do know how to spell TAIL but apparently this stupid voice to text doesn’t understand through context how to spell yet. 🙄)

This was not a good idea to watch just before I went to sleep. However, it was entertaining and informative.
For me, I've come across some real life …close encounters 😱 when I lived in Weenen, KZN, South Africa. From a huge Black Mamba; Rock pythons, (one was 6ft long ); Hooded Spitting Cobras; scorpions, (large pinchers and fat stinger); black and brown widow spiders; a crocodile. But the scariest of all of them was a Solifugae. We called them Roman Spiders, but also known as Sun Spiders.

If there was a baby goods store called "Uncles" it would obviously stock plushies of a number of these, starting with the star nosed mole (always a favorite of mine).

all creatures perfectly designed for a specific role in our environment. it should come as no surprise that perfection viewed through imperfect eyes/mind would see evil where none exists or glaringly miss what's deadly. the malignant detour of imperfect human history is about to come full circle. imperfection was always temporary, so is an environment that matches our destructive nature.

No legs problematic, two legs good, 4 legs probably good, 6 legs questionable, 8 legs or more problematic.

Humans really dont like it when something moves "wrong", but I think thats an artifact of us not likeing non mammals.

Its pretty easy to guess whether another mammal is predator, prey or peer: I dont eat tigers, and generally they dont attempt to eat me. Deer pose no threat to me, predatory or otherwise, and telling the difference is easy.

Snakes, bugs, spiders and the like are harder to judge and sometimes dangerous in weird ways out of all proportion to size. They also turn up in the darndest places. You wont find a tiger in your boot, and tigers cant kill you by nibbling your toe. Tigers are big, obvious and predictable, snakes and spiders are not.

Furthernore, you can reason with another mammal to some degree. A tiger, upon seeing there are three of us and that we see him, isnt apt to attack. One cannot reason with a snake or a spider.

Then, most other mammals find humans frightening, especially in numbers, and they tend to avoid us. The non mammals want to avoid us too, but they arent quite as good at it and stumbling into them is common. Accidentally stepping on a tiger is highly unlikely.

Then, when a tiger does go for you, the method and timing and reason youre dying make sense: mechanical trauma and blood loss because you are food. Snake and spider bites are rarely (if ever) predatory and they injure in wierd confusing ways and often over a far longer timeline than a tiger attack.

Its not some quirk or accident that we largely dont like non mammals, its survival.

Jumping spiders are also freaking adorable. I must have low heebie-jeebie propensity because unless the animal is doing something grotesque like the tongue louse, mere appearance doesn't bug me at all.

Imagine being the first person to see a giant spider crab—and then trying to convince everyone it was real. “No, seriously, this crab was enormous. Its legs were three to four feet long.”
    “Sure, but where is it?”
“Too deep to reach. I couldn’t dive down that far, but I saw it.”
    “Yeah, sure you did.”

I was expecting some cats in cute but deadly. I mean you cant tell me a leopard isnt the cutest thing ever. Nor that it cant pry your skull open .
