i've been on amino for almost a decade now (although the last few years i've only really had it to check in with old friends from time to time). it's been getting really bad maintenance wise in the last few years, and a lot of people have moved over to a new app called kyodo. due to most of its members being amino refugees, the age range currently skews older than how amino used to be (lots of people in their 20s, rather than teens), and so far i've found it to be a really lovely community! it feels like how i remember the good parts of amino to be, with less of the drama. it's still very new and a little buggy, and obviously there will always be bad apples, but i recommend it to anyone who misses the good times on amino! it looks practically identical to amino too, so easy to navigate for old amino users

Hey! Just got into this channel and happened to find this video on Amino. Boy oh boy does this spark memories.
Ok. So I first got into Amino because of Warrior Cats tbh. I spent a little bit of time getting into it, getting to know the features, chatting with people. However, the Amino I joint was what I am pretty sure was the biggest english-speaking Warrior Cats Amino back then. Back in the day I didn't speak English anywhere near the level I'm at now, so I kind of struggled getting into it. I think I was about 11 or 12 back then and god was I a lonely tween. Naturally, I kept coming back to the app, mostly just looking for friends and a sense of community.
At 12 or 13, so when I was barely a teenager and struggling a lot with school to the point where my mom put me into therapy, I then found a german (I am german) Harry Potter Amino (I… had a bad Harry Potter phase unfortunately – and then turned out to be non-binary-). I got a bit into roleplaying, creating OCs and writing some posts and then I was introduced to the second biggest german Harry Potter Community on Amino. That was where the trouble started.
I am not quite sure when I actually properly quit Amino, but I think I was about 15 or 16 at the time, but I still did devote roughly 2 years of my teenage years to that one specific community. Very early I became friends with one of the then-curators there, who introduced me to a bunch of other people. These people became core parts of my friend group on there. Over time, that friend group expanded and expanded and we also had our little private group chat – that happened to be centered around me. I am not even joking when I am saying that the way I treated my friends and that group in general is very much concerning in hindsight. I don't want to use the word cult, because of course it was not that, but it were very strange relationships that I fostered and most definitely rather manipulative – especially considering almost all of us where children.
Aside from that, I eventually became curator and even co-leader eventually – I was even offered to become the main leader of that Amino, which I refused because by then I was already rather sure that I didn't even want to be on Amino anymore in the first place.
As an "authority" on that Amino however, I got in touch with… a lot of people. I will just refer to them by letters, because I am not sure if all of these were using a pseudonym to begin with, but here's a few highlights:
L – one of the first people I met on that Amino, very nice and open in the beginning, one of the then-curators too. They were in their early twenties, hanging out with us mostly 12 – 16 y/o, talking very openly about their absolutely concerning relationship to their >40 y/o fiance at the time, even letting us experience some of their fights either through voice chats or live messages. Generally, they talked a lot about very inappropriate topics and also had a tendency of sending literal furry p*rn into public chats – as a joke (on that note, i consensually sent a VERY CROPPED picture of krogan balls to my friend once IN A PRIVATE CHAT and got a Team Amino Strike-)
T – Goddamn insufferable prick, who would end up grooming and gaslighting my now best friend, got banned from this and other Amino's multiple times, but was such a smooth talker that he kept getting back (my fault once as well. the other two times i was involved, I voted against letting him back, getting overruled once unfortunately)
B – Unfortunately I don't quite remember the whole story there. I didn't have too much to do with him myself, but as far as I know, he was a catfish and a groomer who ended up not only causing quite some damage with some of my friends, but also had a rather public breakdown that had to be contained by our team as to protect other users
O – another insufferable prick, though not anywhere as bad as T. A lot of what had made this guy insufferable I could contribute to age. I had a few fights with him in between, because he thought it would be really funny to interfere with people's RPs when they. didn't want that. Generally pretty obnoxious, but as I said, I would contribute a lot of this to him being a young teen.
There were a whole lot more, but those are my highlights that I can think of of the top of my head. However, I also met a lot of cool people, some of them I have no means of contacting by now sadly. Other people, I am still in contact with. One of them is my best friend in the world, another one does sick cosplays now, another one I just occasionally play games with but she is incredibly funny.
Now to get to the actual point: Amino left me with a whole lot of damage that got worse with every day I spent on that app. I developed an actual addiction (one of my then friends and I made it a challenge who could spend more time online on JUST THAT Amino and we both got to the point of 7000 – 7500 minutes per week for multiple weeks in a row), I was sent to the mental hospital mutiple times, my struggles with school got much worse, to the point where I didn't go at all for literal years. I struggled forming proper connections, on- AND offline and went to a lot of therapy to become better.
I spent about all of my adolescence in therapy, even moving in to a place where I had caregivers around 24/7 for a few years. By now I finally graduated, have started an apprenticeship, moved in with two of my friends in a first own apartment and am genuinely doing so so much better. Amino was an awful experience in very formative years and I am so, so glad that I eventually beat that god damn addiction.

I know I'm 2 year's late; but I was young as shit when I joined amino and now I'm a traumatized 20 year old with the equivalent of a specialized therapy license. The amount of people who young me "saved" from dying bruh. It ruined me.
As for roleplay; I fucking loved that shit, it was an escape but in a healthier way once I established my personal boundaries. "I am my own person, you are your own person. I am not the character I play, you are not the character you play." (Genuinely a segment of ALL my "roleplay rules" posts) it just gave me more understanding and now I treat it more like a passion project whenever I indulge in some good old fashioned roleplay. Funnily enough, it wasn't even amino where I discovered the concept of long-form roleplay. It was actually via an email chain I had with a few friends š

I was in the storytelling places of Amino. I loooooved writing lore behind fantasy worlds and still do!….. Unfortunately Amino was the only truly clean setup from the Wikis and blogs and all that. Now it's a glitchy, broken, dead place with a few people clinging to it's life.

I remember being on the SCP amino years ago when I had the app, my online friends and I were 15-16 and we wound up meeting and roleplaying with a 43 year old woman from the UK. To put it lightly, we realized a bit later on that she was trying to groom us with nsfw group rpās so we just blocked and reported her.

It was one of the best and worst apps Iāve been on Iām really lucky that I was never in any bad situation as I just used it to share my cool drawings that no one else actually liked but Iām now realising how lucky I was because I literally never did anything else on amino. I was the person who ghosted group chats tbh I left amino at some point in 2020 and recently re downloaded it to see what itās like now and itās really a ghost town now

I met my current partner on Clique Amino.
I was like 13 when i joined amino in 2017 and it was such a traumatic experience yet so good that i dont remember much from it. There was several groomers, toxicity, bullying and abusive staff. Yet the app was so fucking addiciting that i ended up spending most of my teenage years on there.
I got bullied, groomed, harassed, and people pretended to yeet themselves for attention etc and that was kind of the norm in clique Amino back then.
I never know what to say when people ask me 'how did you meet your partner?' HOLY SHIT its so embarrasing honestly, especially if you have to try an explain Amino to elders.
if ANYONE has any advice pls lmk lmao

I joined Amino after G+ shutdown, and for several years I spent several years. It was chill and I even joined groups that I was really into. Overall outside of a moment of minor frustration, where I vented mildy for loosing an entire post I wrote after getting jumped scared by my mom. And some clingy person who thought I was depressed for some reason. I had a pretty good time where I had no drama. And then the porn bots came. Sweet mother of Jesus Christ the porn bots. They were so bad and they just kept coming. At that point I literally just had enough and just deleted the app.

It always starts on the kpop group and then turns into the krps.. š This video made me realize how traumatizing amino really was. Like most of this stuff happened to me and I was like dropping my jaw when the memories would come back as you kept talking. And honestly, I remember when having like 8 hours a day on a specific community was like a bragging right, like girl do your homework.. Also, the role play phase was so real, and it got so messy. Sometimes I go back and check on it every once in awhile and Iām so glad the community is dying down because realistically itās so unhealthy.

As bad as it was it was absolutely hilarious

I had an amino account when I was 11-13, I actually made a few friends on a public group chat and was invited into a private group chat with them and I have very fond memories of it. All of these friends were adults and yes they knew I was 12 when I started talking to them, Iām very lucky to have had a good experience with them, they used to remind me of those fun aunts and uncles who you have a lot of fun with and they sometimes give you advice. They may not remember me but I remember them fondly.
Edit: yeah so update⦠I downloaded Amino again because I remembered how pleasant my experience was, and Immediately got added into a N4zi group chat called āR4pe of 87 womenā. I looked through out of curiosity and it was just them sending memes about how much they love hitler. Itās weird, out of all the places to spread n4zi propaganda they chose amino?

I got into Amino for a few months in 2018 cause I was trying to find fans of a somewhat old, and then dead, online game… I didn't stick to it cause the app was so unstable for me it pissed me off š„“
I found Amino had too many options and little coherence, as an app. Plus, the chat was SHIT cause it always crashed. Back then ppl rec'ed it a lot, I'm surprised ā but not too much ā it was such a tragic experience for so many ppl š«Ø
