I’m not religious so I look at religious beliefs and practices from a relatively neutral perspective. I try to make sense of these things from the perspective of their origins. This one, that Jewish people can’t eat pork, makes a ton of sense to me. The Jewish people inhabited a delicate landscape. Pigs, because they will consume a plant completely, including its roots, are extremely damaging to such an ecosystem. The Vikings who colonized Greenland found this out themselves. Pork was their favorite meat, and they brought pigs to Greenland. But within something on the order of a generation they got rid of all the pigs, and eventually all the goats too, because Greenland’s short growing season and delicate landscape couldn’t sustain these animals. Eventually all they had were cows. So I can see why the ancient Jewish people could develop a taboo against eating pork, because pig farming could be way too destructive to their landscape. Also, due to the prevalence of trichonosis, they may have also noticed a correlation between pork consumption and disease. Etc. Similar rational arguments can be made for many religious beliefs.
