AC/DC: ‘Fly On The Wall’ | Is it Really That Bad?
AC/DC’s ‘Fly on the Wall’ is an album that is unviverally panned by critics and fans alike. But is it really that bad?

A good album but lacks production. I wish they would remix it. Definitely need to turn up the bass

Yes I agree Brians voice was not mixed right and too much echo

I always liked Fly on the Wall & never understood all the hate for it. I've seen AC/DC five times & the Fly on the Wall tour started it all off…. Plus, I managed to claw my way up to the very front row.

I would disagree on your opinion bout Blow Up your video, I found that album awesome, with good lyrics (mean streak, this means war, twos up), and great riffs and solos… but everyone got his own opinion

Weird I always thought this was a great record very heavy and raw, I do miss Rudd on the drums but besides that I still jam to this album

Heard this record was AC/DC’s attempt to stand out amongst the rising thrash metal trend, can definately hear it the music is super aggressive, guitars are heavy and brash, Brian’s vocals are super heavy, solos are ear piecing with heaps of pinch harmonics, great album, full of great tracks

Blow Up Your Video has some great highlights in a few songs, and a more clear sound where you can hear things better without the reverb, but I'd argue Fly beats Blow Up by a few points.

They would have needed another production especially on the vocals, but as a whole it's not as bad as it's gotten presented to be.

I think Fly…may be given a bad time because it's the least biggest selling of their career and they were just over 10 years in at this point.
The critics could have been using this to predict that AC/DC's number was up. They were wrong, of course. Pop-rock was very popular then: power ballads, poodle hair, synthesisers, big over-produced nonsense. Typical AC/DC they just said, "Bollocks! We're not doing any of that shit!"
What I love about reading these comments is the diversity. I mean it's the beauty of AC/DC that everybody's opinion is different. Whereas with other bands they have albums that EVERYONE agrees are utter shit – because those albums ARE utter shit. Thats simply not true with AC/DC.
The fans all have a different opinion of what's what. I think this is AC/DC always deliver good/great rock n' roll. Never upsetting their fans by giving them something else entirely.

I'd say The Razors Edge is my favorite album from ac dc and Flick Of The Switch and Fly on the Wall are honorable mentions in my book, both in the top 10 ac dc albums..
Take a few songs from Flick and a few from Fly and apply the Razors Edge era production and you literally have another #1 album on the billboard charts. I honestly think even with Bruce Fairbairn it's still better than self producing the album though. But I would imagine Mutt Lange and Bruce Fairbairn working together on those albums

Danger, Sink the Pink and Shake Your Foundations were played a bit on MTV in the States. The only video that got a custom ending was Sink the Pink where instead of panning to the actors, Angus hit the pool/billiard ball with his Gibson SG with a smile on his face and the billiard ball went into the hole. Loved it.

It’s funny that more people are talking about this album than they are the latest album, Power Up. To me, power up is forgettable, and I’d reach for fly on the wall before I reached for power up. Power up doesn’t have any memorable songs for me, and apparently it doesn’t for anyone else because I don’t hear anyone talking about it.

I got this album the week it came out when I was a teen in High School and loved it at the time. I also went to the concert that year and it was one of the best live AC/DC shows I've seen among many. In retrospect the album is definitely not their finest hour but agree with the review that it's treated unfairly. As for the ridiculous claims about being misogynistic and sexist, well, that's what was going on in the 80's. Has everyone forgotten what the glam/hair bands were singing about back then, not to mention some of the early Rap of the 80's? You'd be hard pressed to find any album (or movie or TV show) of that era that didn't have something that would be found objectionable today.

The production was brutal. Brian sounds like he’s being waterboarded in the next room.

Saw this tour . Didn’t play much from the album that night stayed with the classics. Opened with the title track . Flick Of The Switch, FOTW, and Blow Up Your Video are in my opinion are albums that are largely ignored as far as songs played in concert.

I love Flick of the Switch, my biggest problem with Fly on the Wall is no Phil Rudd. It just doesn’t have the same feel. It’s a bit like the Beatles without Ringo.

When this came out, I played the hell out of it — recorded album onto cassette tape, put in car stereo, left it there — not knowing that it was being panned. It was surprising to learn that it was a supposedly "bad" album. But for Shake Your Foundations alone, it's worth it.

Agree, the mix was pretty bad, the reverb was awful. Flick of the switch was worse, which is a real shame, because that album rocked !

its a great album, the guitars are brutal, Angus solos are outstanding. The songs are really good, but the production were wrong so its a very underreted album.

Angus is on fire soloing all over the place. No this is not a bad album it is awesome. The video director sucked.

I’d rank it above Black Ice and Stiff Upper Lip, and I’ve grown to enjoy it much more over the past 2-3 years, but it is too bad it came out when it did. If Ballbreaker came before Who Made Who and after Flick Of The Switch, and FOTW was released in 1995, I bet it would get higher praise.
My personal hit take is that it’s only a tad superior to For Those About To Rock 🤷♂️

Hot take…this album (musically) is 10x better than back in black, although no Brian Johnson album can touch any Bon Scott era AC/DC
@aaronmcmahon7462
March 11, 2026 at 5:06 pm
The biggest issue is the mix – too much reverb on the drums, and the tinny vocal sound for Brian – but the guitar tones are savage. I think it's one of the most underrated AC/DC albums and is better than many believe. It is like a lot of Brian's albums though, top heavy – it has a better side one than side two, in my opinion.

It often seems like an AC/DC album is an AC/DC album..fly on the wall has some great songs on it,but nothing to really write home about.I had it on cassette tape in 1985,at age 15..I saw them live in September 1985 at Oakland coliseum in oakland,California.. They rocked,as always! Yngwie malmsteens rising force opened the show
