A beautiful beaver dam in northern Minnesota

Voyageurs Wolf Project | October 14, 2025

Wolves and otters (and a beaver and red fox) at a beautiful beaver dam last fall! Granted, there was one particularly malicious wolf in this area who thought our trail camera was its personal chew toy.

One three different occasions within a 3-week period, this wolf—or what we suspect is the same wolf—was mouthing our camera. In one clip, this wolf can be seen making a bee line for our camera with malicious intent in its eyes!

On its 3rd attempt, the wolf succeeded in rendering the camera obsolete by pushing the camera face-down in the snow. The wolf gets an A++ for curiosity, initiative, and vandalism!

But at least we got some nice footage before that! In particular, we got some nice footage of the Shoepack Lake Pack traveling on the ice, which yielded some early winter pack counts which are helpful for many things.

the fox – back in the day we would have called that a cross fox because of the black tail with the white tip. Is that a legit term or was that just a coloquiallism (sp?) we used to use?

Amazing footage, thanks so much for sharing. Wolf pack in which is perfectly identified male and female breeds by tail's position, and funny playgame of otters sliding on the ice, who said it's cold? ❤️

It's all been said already but I'll just add my thanks for a beautiful video. Loved the otters body surfing on the ice. All the animals look really healthy so nature must be in balance there.
