My third year of college I was standing in line for something and realized a neighbor from childhood was a few people in front of me. Blurted out his name and he turned around and immediately recognized me.
We had lived a few minutes apart, he lived next door to one of my best friends. He was a few years older than me. His family had moved before I was 12 but we did still go to high school together, where we probably ran into each a few times but there were a lot of kids so definitely weren't seeing each other all the time.
All that to say THERE IS NO WAY THEY WOULDN'T RECOGNIZE EACH OTHER

I can't believe you didn't mention the absurdity of a lemon tree thriving in New Jersey. I was going to say that the screenwriters were typical provincial Californians who just assume anyone can have a lemon tree in their backyard because they do in the San Fernando Valley. But you're from Chicago! You know what actual winter is like.

To be fair, tomato pie with Jersey tomatoes is a South Jersey thing. My uncle has had several different joints in South Jersey, and NJ tomato pie is always a hit (when in season). (Mind you, we're Irish, so I have no idea how he learned to make such good pizza.)

As a New Jersey native, I can say that there are usually at least 4 or 5 pizza shops in each town. Verona only having 2 pizza shops is absolutely nuts.
