I would love to walk away from “all this” , but I’m elderly, have no valuable skills, and couldn’t afford the rent in most of Europe, any more than I can here. Not much to offer.

Left 16 years ago to South America. Right after the 2008 financial meltdown. And now it’s worse. Visited a few months ago and was absolutely floored on just the cost of daily food. Lousy food to boot. Not to mention my day to day mental state. Happily retired, just like I thought it would be. Up there, impossible.

I’m 70. I worked hard from the age of 16 to have a good life. The light at the end of the tunnel was retirement. I had a nervous breakdown. I’m on pills for anxiety and depression. I gained weight and now live in pain. So what is my retirement actually like? Worry about finances. Worry about losing my liberties. Worry about violence. Worry about food. Worry about the chaos of our government. Hopelessness. No way would my husband consider leaving the US, because he is in complete denial. I dream of some place warm where we could live well. Maybe Costa Rica. But, it’s too late for me. If you are on the fence, leave now while you can.

Some of these places are a lot more expensive than what they are saying! I’ve been to Spain and trust me, you can’t live in 20 Euros a week unless all you eat is rice and beans!
