Could We See Into Our Own Past? (And Other Questions)

Joe Scott | July 31, 2026

Dealing with canker sores? Visit http://www.cankerboy.com to find out how to stop them.

Let’s just say we could build an Alcubierre warp drive and travel faster than light. Would that give us the ability to see into our own past? We explore that thought experiment, plus AI data centers, the growing socialist movement, and a heaping dose of existential dread. All on today’s Lightning Round video.

So if we sent a camera/video camera faster and faster away from us using a nonfinite energy source. Time woul slow continuously until it stopped at light speed… I assume from my knowledge of relativity. But speculatively why wouldn’t that time warp continue for us in ourselves continuously after that threshold even tho impossible. Soooo don’t loose me here. 🙂 if the quantum theory is in fact possible then in due time hopefully we can take a quantum photo from a distant craft we sent today/many years ago and see how life is or was whenever we sent it.

have you done a deep dive in to the Shipping Contineer?

There are claims that is one of the biggest jumps for humans much like the standard screw

Since light can orbit around black holes, we wouldn’t need a mirror, we could just use a black hole, the image would be very warped, but as you pointed out that would be the least of our problems

OMG, I thought I was the only person in the world that remembered The adventures of Mark twain claymation movie. I loved that movie when I was a kid and I have it on DVD.

for the "look in the past": I love when the protagonists FTL-ship arrives somewhere and acts like they didn't just collect years of observation data by flying there.
"there must've been a shift in planetary alignment about a century ago. computer models are unsure…" how far are 100ly for you again? just have a look, send a probe to have a look, ask via subspaceradio if a station in that radius could have a look…
I'd totally accept "we collect the data way faster than we can process it" as explanation why they still have questions to solve and only the "final report" (i.e. episode conclusion/coda) contains all insights.

"Let's be clear. The planet is not in jeopardy. We are in jeopardy. We haven't got the power to destroy the planet – or to save it. But we might have the power to save ourselves." –Michael Crichton (as Ian Malcolm), Jurassic Park

Darkly nihilistic? Nah, i'm lightly nihilistic. For all the turmoil, and all our mistakes, eventually all records of it will, if we're correct, be shorn away. This is not a need to despair, but a reprieve from despair.

It seems a lot of Americans are very ignorant of just how much these data centres are about mass surveillance and not the generative AI most people are familiar with. You all hear AI and think of videos of people with 6 fingers when you should be thinking of Flock and Palantir.

To quote The Great George Carlin (definitely rated 'R' and NSFW, unless you have headphones or your workplace doesn't mind some hard swearing, but look up this stand-up bit if you can: "George Carlin – Saving the Planet"): "Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet! Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The PEOPLE are F****D! Difference. Compared to the people, the planet is doing great! Been here 4.5 billion years…"

And my favorite part of that particular performance (1992, New York City, "Jammin' in New York") is the morons in the audience trying to yell at him for DARING to suggest that Earth will "shake us off like a bad case of fleas – a surface nuisance". HE'S MAKING YOUR POINT FOR YOU, JUST TRY TO LISTEN FOR A FEW SECONDS!

Also, if you enjoyed that performance, look up his skit on airplanes and airlines. "In the unlikely event – these words are very suspect – of a sudden loss of cabin pressure… ROOF FLIES OFF?!"

Socialism can never answer one simple question – what to do about the millions of people, who just dont want to be "liberated" by their "progressive" ideas. It is therefore an inherent violent and absolute evil philosophy which can only be used to kill and starve large parts of any population that is infected with this "great" idea.

As a geologist, I have been trying to explain that perspective shift for years. Even though the oldest rocks I have walked on is 1.8 billion Ma.

That whole segment was ripped straight from my brain. Not sure it’s a good thing I relate so well to dark Joe.

Don't forget. Planet earth made us. We are planet earth. We will protect biodiversity and bring life to the universe. This is the way. Planet earth became self-aware and will take over everything. There is ice, rock, and hot crap out there. We may as well make it interesting.

I'm starting to believe in ghosts after watching the opening of this video…the hanging plant is clearly being moved by some supernatural force…and it appears to be evil. Time to excise the studio Joe 😁

I wrote an essay about humanity being analogous to a virus on the planet when I was 8 and my teacher sent me to the school psychologist.

Ha, I remember that cartoon. Satan and all. Shown in 80/90s Croatia, or possibly still Yugoslavia. Cartoons used to be so much more interesting.

Looking into the past, I would think that so few photons reach us from a planet in the Andromeda galaxy that even theoretically we could not discern animals on its surface.

The AI bubble is more like the gold rush than he let on. During the gold rush, a few people made a fortune from gold but many many more people made a fortune making and selling mining tools, mining mercury to process the ore, making stamping machine, and providing for basic needs of the minors. Much like how the people making the chips, providing the power, building the infrastructure are making bank while the companies making the models are trying to figure out how to get that trillion dollars back that has been invested.
