In 1986, at the peak of 80s glam metal, the Vinnie Vincent Invasion exploded onto the scene with all the ingredients for superstardom: shredding guitars, MTV-ready image, and a former KISS guitarist leading the charge. But behind the big hair, flashy solos, and major record deal was one of the most chaotic and short-lived bands in rock history. This is the story of how Vinnie Vincent, once hailed as KISS’s secret weapon on Creatures of the Night and Lick It Up, built a band that burned bright—and self-destructed even faster.

After being fired from KISS amid contract disputes and growing tension with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Vincent set out to prove he didn’t need the band that made him famous. Forming the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, he secured a massive deal with Chrysalis Records and assembled a lineup that included Dana Strum, Bobby Rock, and former Journey singer Robert Fleischman. Their 1986 self-titled debut album, featuring tracks like “Boyz Are Gonna Rock” and “Animal,” became a cult favorite and cemented their place in the glam metal boom.

But while the music delivered, the internal dynamics were already falling apart. Known for his perfectionism and massive ego, Vincent pushed bandmates to the brink in the studio, reportedly forcing multiple re-recordings and clashing over creative control. Fleischman exited before the band could even film their first music video, replaced by Mark Slaughter—who initially had to lip-sync someone else’s vocals just to keep the band moving.

By the time the band released their second album, All Systems Go (1988), featuring “Love Kills” from A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, the cracks had turned into fractures. Despite touring with major acts like Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden, tensions reached a breaking point. Vincent treated the band like a solo project, controlling contracts, image, and direction, leaving other members feeling like hired hands rather than equals.

The collapse came after a backstage confrontation in Anaheim, leading to one of the most infamous mutinies in rock history. Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum walked out—and didn’t just leave the band, they effectively took the record deal with them. Forming the band Slaughter, they went on to massive success with Stick It to Ya and hits like “Fly to the Angels,” even touring with KISS in a twist of rock irony.

Meanwhile, Vinnie Vincent’s career spiraled into legal battles, missed opportunities, and long periods of reclusion. Despite undeniable guitar talent and a key role in shaping KISS’s 80s comeback, he became known as one of rock’s most self-sabotaging figures.

The Vinnie Vincent Invasion remains one of the biggest “what if” stories in rock history—a band with two cult classic albums, huge potential, and a total meltdown driven by ego, control, and internal chaos.

    Cmon we all know Gene and Paul 😢jewd down his pay he deserved, the only reason I tuned back in was Vinny aggressive flair at the time, but lets not get it twisted Aunt Vinnie is a weirdo…lol

    What were leaving out is that “$500 a week“ in the 80’sequals close to $1700 in today’s market. Not at all bad for a sideman in a new band just starting out.

    To explain that "Signing contracts" thing, look at the logistics which come with doing a tour:
    – You have to hire truckers to move the entire thing from city to city during the tour
    – You have to hire a crew to build the stage
    – You have to hire sound crew to make sure the shows sound good every night
    – You have to hire special effects people to make sure the pyrotechnics of a show will work as they should every single night. (Certainly for a band like Kiss, that's their bread and butter right there.)
    – You have to hire promoters to make sure the venues can be booked.
    AND
    – You have to make sure that every single one of those people hired is insured, because should a calamity happen to that said person, medical bills would be taken care off by the insurance company.

    So every single member of the tour crew (Which includes the band members themselves) has to sign a contract which in return means:
    – That they will be insured during that said tour.
    – Will receive proper payment for their services for the full duration of that tour.
    – Will be properly taken care of, have a bed to sleep in and enough to eat during the tour.

    Vinnie let his contract expire which meant that the band was basically touring with an uninsured employee and basically had to pay for hotel stays out of their own pockets but that wasn't the biggest issue.
    As I pointed out earlier, a Kiss show is a well planned out event, it HAS to be. But Vinnie's solos became longer and longer, screwing up the tightly rehearsed timeline of the show and after coming near blows with Paul Stanley one night, Vinnie was shown the door.

    So, Vinnie, who makes Gene Simmons look HUMBLE, sued the band for unpaid royalties, but the lawyers of the band kindly reminded him that during the time his contract was still valid, he HAD been paid and since he let it expire, the band didn't own him a single dime. The courts agreed.

    Kiss & Crue- the two least-talented bands to ever score a record deal. Both are chock-full-o arse-holes, greedy money-grubbers, & self-dentered ego-maniacs. Neither band even played good rock music, let alone metal or any other genre/label you wanna toss out. They were terrible back in the day when only girls & jocks listened to em, n they're still awful. Jmo.

    Wasn't 500-600 a week back then like 2k a week when adjusted for inflation? If my math is correct it'd be almost 100k a year in salary alone before any album sales and royalties. Not a bad deal imo if housing, equipment and transportation are covered by the label

    I know it's got to be brutal for Vinnie Vincent to live with the fact that it would've been V. V. Invasion's next album that would've sold over 2 million copies with "Up All Night" and "Fly to the Angels."

    I saw KISS 9 times, twice with Vinnie. Once in make up and then without! I remember each time he went into his solo, it just seemed to go on and on! At one show it seemed Paul was going to knock him out! Vinnie was visibly upset that Paul and Gene came back on stage during his solo. He approached Paul and the look on Paul's face was "one more step and lights out!" I bought the Invasion albums and liked it a bit. But just like his solos, his lead breaks went on and on! It grew tiresome! He's extremely talented and writes good music, but his ego and self promotion did him in! The KISS days ended because his ego was bigger than Paul and Gene's which was hard to do! He used their logo in ads for guitars and strings, without permission and without a full time contract. If he had been on contract, had asked permission and had talked up the band they would have whole heartedly supported it. If for no other reason, than to keep the band in the news! Vinnie, was his own worst enemy!

    I was never a fan of Kiss, but I always appreciated the songs when I was young and what they did for the business. Speaking as just a guitar teacher and not a player, when I was on the road nobody appreciated Vinny as a player. I have never been near his level, I was in touring Bar bands and independent signed bands, never made it to his status. Absolutely have to give him credit for that, but you also have to give him credit for ruining it. These people saying Vinny is a great player, and he can just morph into Jeff beck, clearly aren't drug tested regularly. Even back then he didn't sound like a real shredder, he was sloppy around the edges and a lot of his riffs just didn't make sense. Eddie Van Halen had riffs that didn't make sense but they always sounded cool and were very unique, it wasn't easy to recreate cleanly. Vinny was never clean, he was never unique, his playing was just his interpretation of what other shredders we're actually doing. These people are talking about him like he was Paul Gilbert or something, I just don't feel like he deserved any of it. I think the reason he was such a jerk, he knew he wasn't that gifted, he knew he wasn't actually a genuine shredder. Having a major record deal, your band quitting and taking your deal, is something you probably never heard ever happening to anyone else. Congrats vinny, you're in the books for that at least.

    I remember hearing some kind of controversy about him supposedly speeding up his guitar tracks. To make him sound faster and better than he actually is. I don't know if this is true or if it was just somebody talking shit about him?
